Netflix Hit ‘Squid Game’ Spurs Search for Next Korean Stock Star - Yahoo Finance

(Bloomberg) -- From boy band BTS to the addictive “Baby Shark” songs and now survival drama Squid Game, Korean entertainment has become hugely popular with consumers and stock investors alike, prompting some chatter about where the next hits will come from.

Most Read from Bloomberg

Squid Game, the country’s latest sensation topping Netflix Inc. charts around the world, has also sparked some big share-price gains. Bucket Studio Co., which holds a stake in the agency representing the show’s lead actor, has more than doubled this month. ShowBox Corp., whose predecessor had invested in Siren Pictures, the show’s privately-owned production firm, has climbed 55%.

Global streaming services are stepping up their investment in Korean content, with Netflix boosting its planned spending on the country’s movies and TV shows to $500 million this year. Still, like winning stocks, hit content can be hard to foretell.

“Any company can produce a hit,” said Lee Kihoon, an analyst at Hana Financial Investment Co. who has buy ratings on Studio Dragon Corp., CJ ENM Co. and Jcontentree Corp. “We cannot tell who will produce the next ‘Squid Game’ because anyone can make it,” he said.

Still, Studio Dragon is a “must-buy” for investors who want to make bets in the Korean entertainment space given its sizable $2.2 billion market valuation in a field with many small players, Lee said. The producer of “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha,” another currently high-rated Netflix show, Studio Dragon is a subsidiary of Korean movie giant CJ ENM.

In contrast, Oh Taewan, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities Co., likes smaller names that don’t have long-term partnerships with Netflix, giving them more flexibility. One he believes may have growth potential is Astory Co., the firm behind the Netflix period zombie thriller series “Kingdom.”

Oscar Winner

For analyst Douglas Kim, shares of Pan Entertainment Co. and Barunson Entertainment & Arts Corp. could outperform on growing demand for Korean content. Barunson, the producer of Oscar-winning movie “Parasite,” jumped more than 30% in February 2020, the month the film won the award, though it has since wiped out all of that gain.

“Over the next 2-3 years, there is a strong probability that other Korean dramas and movies on the Netflix or Disney OTT platforms could become very popular as well,” Kim wrote in a recent note on Smartkarma.

Box Office: ‘Venom’ Sequel Aims for $50 Million-Plus Opening Weekend - Variety

Following a quiet stretch at the domestic box office, Sony’s comic book sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” looks to make some noise. The film opens in theaters on Friday after five delays, something of a pandemic-record.

Directed by Andy Serkis and starring Tom Hardy as an otherworldly lethal protector, the superhero movie is estimated to collect at least $50 million in its opening weekend. But, given the unpredictable moviegoing landscape, that figure comes with a symbiote-sized asterisk. Some industry experts have indicated that pent-up anticipation could propel inaugural ticket sales for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” as high as $65 million. After all, theaters have been without a buzzy new release since Disney’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” opened on the big screen nearly a month ago. That should mean the box office is primed for a hit. Sony, however, is tempering expectations, knowing that we’re still living through a generational public heath crisis. The studio behind the follow-up film is projecting a debut closer to $40 million.

The “Venom” sequel cost $110 million to produce, not including hefty promotional fees. The PG-13 film appeals mostly to male audiences, which could work in its favor. As the film exhibition industry attempts to recover from the pandemic, younger men have fueled box office returns for Marvel’s “Black Widow” and “Shang-Chi,” Universal’s “Fast and Furious” installment “F9″ and the Ryan Reynolds sci-fi comedy “Free Guy.” That’s not to say every movie geared toward boys has been a hit. There have been several duds, like the Warner Bros. superhero adaptation “The Suicide Squad” and Paramount’s “G.I. Joe” entry “Snake Eyes.”

A potential benefit is that “Venom: Let There be Carnage” is playing only in theaters, a factor that helped sustain revenues for exclusive big screen offerings like “Free Guy” and “Shang-Chi.” More often than not, pandemic-era movies that landed day-and-date on streaming platforms — such as “Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” and Warner Bros.’ “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” have suffered steep declines in the weeks following its opening in theaters.

There’s one thing that “Venom 2” may not need in order to entice audiences, and that’s positive reviews. Critics panned the first “Venom” (it has a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes), which did little to deter comic book enthusiasts. The 2018 film became an unexpected box office success, grossing $80 million in its debut and ending its theatrical run with $213 million in North America and $856 million worldwide. It also inspired Sony to greenlight even more superhero properties, Jared Leto’s “Morbius” among them, inspired by its arsenal of Marvel characters.

“Venom: Let There be Carnage” will easily top the domestic box office, but it won’t be the only new movie to open nationwide. Two newcomers — the animated comedy “The Addams Family 2” and “The Many Saints of Newark,” a prequel story set in “The Sopranos” universe — will compete for second place, with the former expected to pull ahead.

“The Many Saints of Newark,” playing in 3,180 venues, looks to be the latest Warner Bros. movie to debut to $10 million or less while it opens simultaneously on HBO Max. The studio’s executives have maintained that streaming hasn’t cannibalized ticket sales, saying that movies striking out at the box office have also been failing to draw a big audience on HBO Max. “The Many Saints of Newark” isn’t on track to have a big turnout in theaters, but it could prove the exception to the HBO Max effect. “Sopranos” fans have been trained to catch up the happenings of the all-powerful mobsters from the comfort of their couch, and longtime devotees to the HBO series could prefer to watch the latest addition at home.

“The Many Saints of Newark” follows the teenage years of Tony Soprano (portrayed by Michael Gandolfini, son of the late “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini) and company as rival gangsters begin to challenge the crime family’s hold over the city. David Chase, who created “The Sopranos,” co-wrote the script with Lawrence Konner.

Targeting a very different kind of family audience, the PG-rated “The Addams Family 2” is projected to make $15 million to $17 million from 3,700 theaters in its first weekend in theaters. That would be a much smaller start than its predecessor, 2019’s “The Addams Family,” which amassed $30 million in its opening. However, the sequel will be available on premium video-on-demand platforms on the same day as its theatrical debut, which will cut into ticket sales. Unlike the HBO Max release plan, in which subscribers can watch new movies at no extra cost, patrons will have to pay $19.99 to rent “The Addams Family 2” and witness the adventures of the morbid Morticia and Gomez and their kooky kin. Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron and Chloe Grace Moretz round out the voice cast.

TWICE are photo-ready in new teaser for ‘The Feels’ music video - NME

TWICE have released a new teaser of the music video for their forthcoming single ‘The Feels’.

On September 29, the nine-member act shared the second music video teaser for their new song ‘The Feels’, which arrives on Friday (October 1). The forthcoming track will be TWICE’s first official English-language single.

In the new visual, the members of TWICE have fun taking playful photos with each other at a photo booth while dressed up for the prom, in line with the theme established in the first teaser.

“Cause I can feel a real connection / A supernatural attraction / I got the feels for you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,” sing TWICE in the brief snippet of the upcoming song.

In the first teasear, released on September 27, the girl group receive a mysterious envelope from under their door. The camera pans over the members as they pass the envelope to one another before finally landing on rapper Chaeyoung, who opens it to reveal an invitation. “You are cordially invited to ‘The Feels’ PROM,” reads the enclosed card.

The clip cuts to a montage of TWICE getting ready for the event, soundtracked by a snippet of the new song. “Boy I, boy I, boy I know, I know you’ve got the feels / Boy I, boy I, boy I know (uh!) / I’m so curious,” they sing over a funky bassline.

Last week, JYP Entertainment had shared that the girl group would be making their debut appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 1, shortly after the release of ‘The Feels’. It will also be the first time TWICE will be performing on the American late-night talk show.

Additionally, the the group will also be appearing on American TV network ABC’s GMA3: What You Need To Know on October 6. According to KoreaJoongAngDaily, TWICE will be performing ‘The Feels’ and participating in an interview during the appearance.

In 2020, the girl group had released English-versions of their singles ‘More & More’ and ‘I Can’t Stop Me’. They also dropped their first original English track ‘What You Waiting For’ as a B-side on their 2019 Japanese-language album ‘&Twice’. However, ‘The Feels’ will be their first official English single.

Squid Game: How Much Is 45.6 Billion Won In US & UK? - Screen Rant

In Squid Game, the grand prize for winning the game is a whopping 45.6 billion Korean won – but just how much money is that? In the same vein as Alice in Borderland, The Hunger Games, and James Wan’s Saw movies, Squid Game pits ordinary people against each other in a series of death games. But apart from staying alive, the prize for winning Squid Game involves more than enough money for its desperate players to start anew.

Indeed, the 45.6 billion won grand prize is Squid Game’s proverbial dangling carrot. It’s there to motivate and extract the maximum effort from all of Squid Game’s 456 players, every single one of which is an extremely desperate and heavily indebted individual. In Squid Game episode 2, it’s revealed that the death of each player contributes 100,000,000 won to the massive piggy bank displayed above the player’s dorm room. As players die one by one, more and more money is funneled into this piggy bank, and the prize gets closer and closer to the promised 45.6 billion won. And finally, during the ending of Squid Game, this amount is reached when Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) becomes the sole survivor.

Related: How Squid Game's Workers Are Chosen - Theory Explained

45.6 billion Korean won is currently worth around $38.6 million or £28.2 million. That’s more than enough for Gi-hun to pay off his debts and get custody of his daughter, for Kang Sae-byok (Jung Ho-yeon) to extract her family from North Korea and live a nice life in Seoul, or for Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) to give back what he stole and avoid going to prison. Although 45.6 billion isn’t nearly enough for a person to be considered a billionaire on U.S. soil, $38.6 million is still a large sum of money, especially taking into account that the average American citizen will earn approximately $3 million in their lifetime, for example.

Moreover, the number 456 is a recurring theme throughout the survival drama series. In Squid Game episode 1, Gi-hun earned 4,560,000 won after betting on horses during his daughter’s birthday. And as the last player chosen for Squid Game, Seong Gi-hun is also known as Player 456. This is important because Squid Game isn’t just about money, as it deeply explores themes of morality and wealth inequality.

Indeed, 45.6 billion Korean won is not just the grand prize – it also represents every single one of the players in Squid Game’s cast of characters. Moreover, the fact that the people behind Squid Game can give away 45.6 billion won, while financing the island’s day-to-day operations, is also telling of just how rich and powerful the VIPs behind the games truly are.

SHINee’s Key unveils retro-inspired music video for ‘Bad Love’ - NME

SHINee member Key has made his long-awaited solo comeback with the new single ‘Bad Love’.

In the stunning new visual for the ’80s-inspired synthpop track, Key pays homage to retrofuturism through its fashion and colourful sets. In between shots of the high-energy choreography, the singer is seen travelling through space in a UFO, which explodes dramatically at the end.

Don’t need that kind of love, called love (Run away further, it’s bad love) / I’m sick of this bad love / Don’t need that kind of love, called love (Curse more and harder to bad love) / There isn’t a piece of you in me,” he declares in the chorus.

‘Bad Love’ is the title track of Key’s new solo mini-album of the same name. The six-track record features his August single ‘Hate That…’, which featured vocals from SM Entertainment labelmate Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon.

‘Bad Love’ marks the SHINee member’s first solo project in nearly three years, since his 2019 project ‘I Wanna Be’. That release was a repackaged version of his 2018 debut solo studio album ‘Face’, and featured collaborations with SISTAR‘s Soyou, (G)I-DLE‘s Soyeon and South Korean singer Crush.

Earlier this year, SHINee made their long-awaited return with the album ‘Don’t Call Me’. The group later released a repackaged edition of the album titled ‘Atlantis’, which featured three new tracks.

BTS released a documentary showcasing the making of their and Coldplay's recently released track My Universe. The video revealed Chris Martin travelled to South Korea for two days to record the song.
PUBLISHED ON SEP 27, 2021 07:17 AM IST

On Sunday, BTS released a documentary titled ‘Coldplay X BTS Inside My Universe Documentary’ which gave a closer look at how their recently released song My Universe was made. The video, shared on the K-pop group's YouTube channel Bangtan TV, revealed Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin was approached by BTS about 18 months before the song was recorded.

“About 18 months ago, I got a message from somebody. They said BTS want to do a song with you. I said, ‘How? How would that work?' I didn’t understand how that could be possible,” Chris said at the start. He revealed the title, My Universe, was something his friend once said and he thought it was a ‘cool’ title for a song and he then penned the track.

Chris travelled to South Korea for two days, bearing gifts for the BTS members, and recorded the song with them. While RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook were in awe of the singer, they were also excited to record the song.

“This song is all about us creating something together. That's why Chris came here in person and recorded with us as well. I really loved the theme 'not alone but together',” V said. J-Hope added, “It could have been done remotely but we could add more sincerity to the song this way.”

As they each took turns to record their individual parts for the song, Chris doubled up as a cheerleader and encouraged them. When Jungkook was set to head into the recording studio, he admitted he was scared he might mess the song up. “It feels like when I first debuted. Chris Martin will be directing my performance and I'm worried I'll mess up,” he said. However, Chris was impressed with him. “Please tell JK he's so impressive,” he requested the translator.

Speaking about the lyrics of the song, BTS leader RM said that Chris told him the song is very personal to him as he was frustrated over not being able to perform live in concerts. “I thought about how to make this relevant to BTS. Since the lyrics go, 'You are my universe,' this song should definitely be dedicated to ARMY. I wrote the lyrics while picturing the day we reunited with ARMY,” RM said.

Chris added, “I think it's very special to me that the most popular artist in the world speaks Korean and is like a group of brothers, not from the West, and it just feels very hopeful to me in terms of thinking of the world as one family. Then of course, when you see how they are as people and their songs, it's really a message of togetherness and finding, being yourself, all the stuff I agree with.”

BTS and Coldplay released the song on Friday. Ahead of the song's release, the members of both groups met in New York and posed for a picture. It was then revealed that BTS had gifted Coldplay with modernised hanboks. Later, Jin revealed he received a guitar from Chris. Coldplay and BTS debuted the song at Global Citizen Live, which took place this weekend.

ITZY Talks About Their New Concept & Recommended Song From "CRAZY IN LOVE" - hellokpop

Interview

By  |

ITZY is back with an album to remember!

JYP Entertainment’s prized female quintet ITZY has recently released their first full-length album CRAZY IN LOVE.

Before dropping their highly-awaited album on September 24 at 1 PM KST, the girls first participated in an interview with media outlets where they shared their excitement about their music release.

ITZY’s charismatic leader Yeji said, “Since it’s a full album that many fans have been waiting for, I prepared the album with even more joy. It was especially nice to be able to listen to more songs to the fans. Also, we filmed the music video for the b-side song for the first time. I hope you will like it a lot. As it is an album that all the members put all their heart into preparing, I have high expectations for this activity as well.”

The girls also talked about their new concept. “It seems different for ITZY to sing about the feeling of loving someone. In particular, the feeling of love is expressed with ‘LOCO,’ another word for ‘Crazy.’ It has a new feeling musically, so I hope you will listen carefully to how it has changed,” said Lia.

For Yuna, she said fans can see another side of them through their comeback. “Until now, we dealt with themes revolving around ‘me,’ or ‘for myself.’ With this new album, we’ll show what it’s like to be so caught up in love that you don’t know what to do with yourself. It captures all the ups and downs that come with being attracted to someone. I think can come across as endearing,” she said.

CRAZY IN LOVE contains 16 songs bannered by the title track “LOCO.” When asked what song they would like to recommend to fans, Yeji chose the feel-good song “Chillin Chillin.” Lia and Chaeryong picked “LOVE is” because it is emotional and moving. Moreover, Ryujin recommended “Gas Me Up” while Yuna suggested “Sooo LUCKY.”

From Coldplay to Megan Thee Stallion, Halsey to Ed Sheeran and Steve Aoki, 12 times BTS worked with international artist - Bollywood Hungama

There’s no doubt the South Korean group BTS has taken the world by storm and reached superstardom. Besides breaking records, topping the charts, winning numerous awards, and making appearances at prestigious events, the Korean band is capable of selling out stadiums, products and everything they promote in seconds and minutes. Many artists worldwide are in-line to collaborate with BTS and till now, all the collaborations that BTS have proven to become smashing hits. With the most recent collaboration with Coldplay on the track ‘My Universe’ which released on September 24, the lyric was released though an official video is yet to come.

From Coldplay to Megan Thee Stallion, Halsey to Ed Sheeran and Steve Aoki, 12 times BTS worked with international artist

Here is the list of the times BTS collaborated with the biggest names in the international music scene:

BUTTER feat. MEGAN THEE STALLION
Rapper Megan Thee Stallion featured in the South Korean group’s summer hit ‘Butter’ which topped the Billboard hot 100 chart for 9 weeks. Megan’s adlibs and signature ‘Ah!’ was even featured in the dance video that the 3J – j-hope, Jungkook and Jimin dropped.

PERMISSION TO DANCE with ED SHEERAN
After the chart-topping ‘Butter’, the new track ‘Permission to Dance’ was the one to switch place at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 chart. Co-written by Ed Sheeran, who had previously co-written ‘Make It Right’, in BTS' Map of the Soul: Persona. The song initially described as a dance-pop song that the song that “will make your heart beat to the rhythm of BTS's positive energy.” Though Ed Sheeran might not feature physically on the tracks, he had worked on with BTS but he definitely made his presence felt.
WASTE IT ON ME, THE TRUTH UNTOLD & MIC DROP WITH STEVE AOKI
BTS marked their first collaboration with the phenomenal producer Steve Aoki, who is not just a DJ but also fashion designer, author, and philanthropist, for the epic single ‘MIC Drop’ which soared high on the charts. The group sure seems to love Steve Aoki because they collaborated on another song having straight-up piano ballads which might not be the first thing you think when you hear the name Steve Aoki, so it might be a surprise to find out he had a hand in the vocal line’s emotional slowy on Love Yourself: Tear album song- ‘The Truth Untold’. The song ‘Waste It on Me’ – the band’s third collaboration with the artist is a light, poppy dance track featuring Jungkook, RM, and Jimin that doesn’t break the mold in any way but is pleasant enough. The music video featured an all-Asian-American cast in the video including Crazy Rich Asians' Ken Jeong.
IDOL FEAT. NICKI MINAJ
As if there wasn’t already enough going on in the bells and whistles of ‘Idol’, Nicki Minaj jumped on board a new version of the track from the Love Yourself: Answer album. The name-dropping John Mayer and boasting, “What’s good, Korea? / You know I’ve been a boss for my whole career” international superstar Nicki Minaj’s verse packed with even more action, power and fiery attitude that already sounded like it was about to erupt.
MAKE IT RIGHT FEAT. LAUV & WHO
This collaboration of the band with American singer-songwriter Lauv is what that is just right. The reboot of ‘Make It Right’, an R&B single co-written by Ed Sheeran immediately reached the No. 1 in the US iTunes chart when it was released. After that, BTS featured on Lauv’s album how i’m feeling on the most romantic track ‘Who.’
BOY WITH LUV FEAT. HALSEY
Talking about collaborations and not mention Halsey and BTS’ friendship and sort of a sequel to BTS' 2014 hit, ‘Boy In Luv’, ‘Boy With Luv’ made everyone went ~oh my my my~in 2019. Funky bubblegum pop song featuring Halsey showcased their electric chemistry between the two artists marked the whole thing even more enjoyable and intoxicating.
CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP WITH BECKY G
j-hope created his version of ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’ sampling it from 2006 single of the same name. The song featured singer-songwriter Becky G and totally killing it with lyrics in English, Korean, and Spanish. The track also started a dance challenge craze on the internet.
OLD TOWN ROAD REMIX with LIL NAS X (SEOUL TOWN ROAD)
RM performed alongside Lil Nas X to remix collaboration of ‘Old Town Road’ called ‘Seoul Town Road’ marking the group's debut performance in the 2020 Grammys a first for a K-pop act. RM made the version even more fun by adding his worldplay in the lyrics – “I got the homis in my bag / have you heard of that? / Homis made of steel, from Korea, they the best.” (homis is a farming tool in Korea.)! BTS performed the same track together at Grammys 2020.
ALL NIGHT Feat. JUICE WRLD
RM and SUGA teamed up with the late rapper Juice WRLD for the third instalment of the soundtrack for BTS’ mobile game BTS World for the ‘90s tinged hip-hop track. The low-key sounding classic breezy and bubbling track with the three voices meshes perfectly.
ON feat. SIA
BTS' album Map of the Soul: 7 released with a powerful anthem which was sung with an equally powerful voice of ‘Chandelier’ fame, Sia, for the digital release of ‘ON’. Both the artists being fighters in their own way; empower with their voices and sing that nothing can hold them down.
BEST OF ME with THE CHAINSMOKERS
The Chainsmokers' modern and upbeat style was totally present in Best of Me from Love Yourself: Answer. There’s no denying is a banger of its kind while putting BTS’ own stamp and subtly bearing The Chainsmokers’ hallmark on the track, which would go down at an EDM festival or at the K-pop group’s own shows.
EMBED 10:
DREAM GLOW WITH CHARLI XCX
BTS World – a gaming application – has some of the most beautiful tracks created by BTS. One of them is ‘Dream Glow’ feat. singer Charli XCX. The song is so catchy with the vocals of all artists, it instantly makes you want to groove.

A BRAND NEW DAY WITH ZARA LARSSON
One of the hidden gems from BTS World gaming application is ‘A Brand New Day’ featuring the amazing Zara Larsson. It’s an earworm with some of the best beats created.
