The winter season at City Center features premieres by Amy Hall Garner and Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish, and a program honoring women who shaped the organization.
The season — the company’s 65th — runs from Nov. 29 to Dec. 31, and is dedicated to the women of Ailey, including a program on Dec. 19 that pays tribute to the choreographers and dance educators who helped shaped the organization: Carmen de Lavallade, Judith Jamison, Denise Jefferson and Sylvia Waters.
“It’s really about honoring the strength and vision and guidance of these strong women who have made it possible for us to still be here,” said Robert Battle, the company’s artistic director.
The full-length, five-week holiday season will begin with an opening night gala honoring Jamison, the company’s artistic director emeritus, and will present a to-be-announced new work before closing with the Ailey classic “Revelations” (1960).
The season continues with a world premiere of a ballet by Battle, drawing from folk and modern dance styles, with an original score by the composer John Mackey, a longtime collaborator. The company will also present the debuts of Garner’s “Century,” inspired by her grandfather’s 100th birthday, set to music by Ray Charles, Count Basie and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band; and Roxas-Dobrish’s “Me, Myself and You,” a dreamlike duet about a woman asking herself if she should let go or forge ahead.
Also on the lineup are Brown’s “Dancing Spirit” (2009), a tribute to Jamison’s elegance, set to music by Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis and War; Alonzo King’s neoclassical work, “Following the Subtle Current Upstream,” which asks the question, “How do we return to joy?”; Twyla Tharp’s “Roy’s Joys,” set to music by Roy Eldridge; the Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen’s “Solo,” for three dancers, set to a Bach violin suite; and Roberts’s “Ode,” a meditation on the fragility of life in a time of increased gun violence. The dance, set to a jazz score, will be staged with an all-female cast.
The season will also present Ailey classics, including “Cry” (1971), an early work dedicated to Black women and mothers; “Night Creature” (1975); and “Memoria” (1979); along with the return of more recent hits: Kyle Abraham’s “Are You in Your Feelings?” (2022) and Roberts’s “In a Sentimental Mood” (2022).
“Being with our audience in the same space, at the same time, is to me an expression of returning to joy,” Battle said. “And that, to me, encapsulates what this season is all about.”

Actor-politician Sunny Deol has blamed "political game" for hatred between India and Pakistan, saying the people of the two countries have "equal love" for each other.
At the trailer launch event of his upcoming film Gadar 2 on Wednesday night, the actor said the people of the two nations don't want to fight each other.
"It is all not about what to give and what to take, it is about humanity. There shouldn't be any fights. There is equal love on both sides. Yeh siyasi khel hota hai jo sab nafratein paida karta hai. (It is the political game that gives birth to hatred), and you will see the same in this film as well.
"Janta nahi koi chahti ki ek dusre ke sath hum jhagda kare. (People don't want us to fight with each other). After all, we are from the same land," Deol, who is the BJP MP from Gurdaspur, told reporters.
In Gadar 2, Deol reprises his role of Tara Singh from his 2001 blockbuster hit Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
Filmmaker Anil Sharma, who also helmed the original, has directed the follow-up which is produced by Zee Studios.
Deol said he is grateful to the audience for showering love on Gadar, when it was released 22 years ago.
He also added that he was initially skeptical about doing a follow-up on the original movie.
"When 'Gadar' was released, we didn't know how it would do (at the box office). We made it with all heart and honesty. The people made it big. We hope the same happens with 'Gadar 2',” he said.
"I was afraid to touch a complete film like 'Gadar' again, but when Sharma ji narrated the script, so then (changed my mind),” he added.
The 65-year-old actor believes it’s the simplicity of Gadar and its characters that struck a chord with people.
"There are some moments, some characters that touch people. It is not me, but the character that works. I believe Tara Singh is a character that worked well. It is his simplicity and love for family that touched people."
Also starring Ameesha Patel, and Utkarsh Sharma, Gadar 2 will hit cinemas on August 11.

BTS star Jin and Winner member Seung-yoon came together for a couple of pictures while enlisted in the army.
BTS and Winner fans were over the moon after Jin dropped a couple of new pictures from his meetup with Seung-yoon on Weverse. The singers, who are currently enlisted in the South Korean army, posed for happy photos and talked about the treatment they are getting. Fans of the singers posted their photos on Twitter. One person wrote, “Assistant Military Drill Instructor Kim Seokjin with WINNER's Seungyoon who just completed his training at his division.” The photo showed Jin in a black shirt over his camo military uniform. He is also wearing a cap and holding up his fingers in a peace sign. Seung-yoon is also in his military uniform and giving the thumbs up sign to the camera.
The Weverse post by Jin read, “Seungyoon-ssi, congratulations on your completion. i had a fun time during the 6 weeks. (He's a cool vocalist from the group winner) you worked hard during your trainee life, do well at your base as well sob sob."
Jin also mentioned that they are not getting any special treatment in the army. "I asked to take a photo together to commemorate hoping that ARMYs and Inner Circles would like it. Our company commander and administrative commander are good people so had a good 6 weeks (didn't get special treatment),” he wrote.
Jin, whose real name is Kim Seokjin, is the oldest member of popular K-pop band BTS. He was enlisted in the army for mandatory service last year. He enlisted last year in December and was the first member to enrol for his duties. He will be wrapping up the service sometime around BTS' next debut anniversary. He recently achieved the rank of Corporal in the army.
Recently, a biography on the band was launched. Titled Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS, it was launched on the occasion of their 10th anniversary as a group. In the group's first official book, Jin made the revelation that he was lured to be part of BTS with the promise that it would help his acting career.
An excerpt from the memoir reads, “Jin laughs, thinking back to his casting at Big Hit Entertainment in the spring of 2011. What the workers incharge of singing him had promised him back then technically hasn't come to fruition. Jin continues, ‘Look at how idols these days go into acting, we’ll let you become an actor eventually. That’s how they convinced me’.”

A group of Malaysian musicians and festival vendors are preparing a class action lawsuit against the 1975 after frontman Matty Healy’s onstage criticism of the government’s anti-LGBTQ+ at the Good Vibes festival saw the entire event cancelled.
On Friday, Healy paused the band’s set at the Kuala Lumpur event to admit that he hadn’t looked into the country’s punitive LGBTQ+ laws before agreeing to perform there. “I don’t see the fucking point, right, I do not see the point of inviting the 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with,” he said.
“I am sorry if that offends you and you’re religious and it’s part of your fucking government, but your government are a bunch of fucking retards and I don’t care anymore,” he continued. “If you push, I am going to push back. I am not in the fucking mood, I’m not in the fucking mood.”
The band’s set was cut 30 minutes later, and authorities cancelled the remainder of the three-day festival the following day. The 1975 have been banned from performing in the country and 18 police reports have been filed.
The class action lawsuit names Healy and his three bandmates and seeks compensation over losses incurred as a result of the cancellation. While international artists were paid in full prior to the event, payment terms differ for local artists, a representative for festival promoter Future Sound Asia told NME. “Unfortunately, the unforeseen cancellation of the festival does throw a spanner in the works. It’s a very regrettable situation and we fully acknowledge the impact on our local talent – all of whom have been immensely supportive in these challenging times.”
Twenty eight food vendors were also said to have been affected. Future Sound Asia called the cancellation a “catastrophic financial blow”.
Mathew Thomas Philip of Malaysian law firm Thomas Phillip labelled Healy’s remarks “a deliberate reckless act done knowing well [sic] of the consequences”.
At a town hall meeting attended by musicians, vendors and media in the Hartamas area of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, Philip said: “My view is that the 1975 must be held responsible and accountable for the losses suffered by the artists and vendors.” Five musicians and vendors are currently participating in the class action, Philip told NME, and seek general damages alongside exemplary and aggravated damages.
Future Sound Asia is not involved but told the magazine it was “happy to assist them in any way needed” and said the company is “currently exploring legal options” against the band.
The Guardian has contacted representatives for the 1975 for comment. Healy previously commented on the incident on Instagram, sharing the festival’s statement on the event cancellation with the caption: “Ok well why don’t you try and not make out with Ross for 20 years. Not as easy as it looks”.
Healy’s comments have drawn criticism from LGBTQ+ Malaysians for obstructing the work of local activists but support from others, including Peter Tatchell, for highlighting the country’s human rights abuses.
Future Sound Asia has said it fears the incident “will erode the confidence of music promoters and various stakeholders in the live entertainment industry across the nation and threaten the stability of our burgeoning live arts scene.”

Every day, the realities of my queerness make me hold on tighter to the ones I love. As a mixed race first generation immigrant, whose mother moved from Malaysia to the UK in the 1960s, I get to enjoy the benefits of the land that once colonised my mother’s. I can walk down the street holding the hand of my lover, and kiss their face, but if we went home to Malaysia, this love would be fined, caned or locked away. Not for me, as a foreigner to my motherland and of Chinese descent, but for my partner, a Malaysian born Malay.
In Malaysia, there are no LGBTQ+ rights, with a penalty of up to 20 years in prison for sodomy; Global Trans Rights Index ranks Malaysia as the second worst country in the world for transgender rights. And a privileged white man – the lead singer of British band the 1975 – has inadvertently made this situation worse.
Speaking on stage at Good Vibes festival in Kuala Lumpur, Matty Healy – a champagne bottle in his hand – told the Muslim majority crowd: “I do not see the point of inviting the 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with,” before kissing his male bandmate, Ross MacDonald. “I’m sorry if that offends you, and you’re religious … If you want to invite me here to do a show, you can fuck off. I’ll take your money, you can ban me, but I’ve done this before, and it doesn’t feel good.” The band were indeed banned within half an hour, and the next two days of the festival were cancelled.
Condemnation has been swift from Malaysia’s music scene – friends close to the scene tell me the cancellation has robbed local musicians of the chance to perform on a major stage, and festival vendors of cashflow – and also taken from the LGBTQ+ community, as the Guardian has reported.
However good Healy’s intentions or off-the-cuff his remarks, his apparent white saviour complex and performative activism mirror the post-colonial guilt that many white westerners seem to have when visiting countries once ruled by the British empire.
Britain ruled “Malaya” from 1824, taking over from the Dutch, who had been there since 1641 and before them the Portuguese from 1511, with Japan occupying between 1941 and 1945. After the war the British returned until Malaysia finally gained independence on 31 August 1957. It is illegal to be gay in 64 countries, and more than half of these countries were under European colonial rule at some point. Malaysia’s own 377A penal code that forbids homosexual activity is a homophobic legacy left behind from this colonial era.
A precolonial Malay archipelago was home to an acceptance of gender variance. The sida-sida were androgynous male-bodied priests who served in the palaces of the Sultans – they typically wore women’s clothes, and probably engaged in sexual relationships with the same or both sexes. They took on the role of protector of both the human and spirit world, safeguarding women and protecting food and clothing from being tampered with by humans or spirits.
In Borneo, the manang bali were a group of gender non-conforming shamans, responsible for ritual healing, and were often referred to as “transformed shamans”. Because of this, they took on the highest rank of shamanhood in the Indigenous Iban tribe and practised for hundreds of years, until the 1800s when the British came and brought Christianity with them.
As a Muslim country, sharia law is also enacted on LGBTQ+ Malaysians, with flogging and caning as punishments. In September 2018 two women were caned six times before a courtroom audience and fined 3,300 ringgit (£561) for “attempting to have lesbian sex in a parked car”. A queer Halloween celebration in 2022 at RexKL, an arts venue in Kuala Lumpur that hosts a wide range of events for the creative community, was raided; local queer organisation Justice for Sisters reported at least 24 people arrested on various grounds. The Islamic Authority picked people out at random, separating Muslims from non-Muslims, and 18 gender-diverse people who were said to be “male … posing as women” were arrested.
Healy’s terrible misjudgment was to steam into this highly complex and historically fraught situation without due care, or seemingly enough research. The British LGBTQ+ rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has argued in these pages that Healy “succeeded in drawing global attention to Malaysia’s persecution of its queer citizens”, and “simply wanted to show solidarity … That strikes me as perfectly valid.” But one queer Malaysian producer and DJ has argued to me in recent days that “careless displays of ‘activism’, in the form of a conceited performance, damage the work of grassroots activists”. Another queer Malaysian has told me that Healy’s behaviour will make rightwing politicians “more paranoid”, and give them more ammo to further anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-music narratives. The fear is that queer artists will find it harder to secure spaces for their events.
What’s doubly galling is that there are plenty of those grassroots organisations doing work in a more careful and sustained way. Justice for Sisters raises awareness about violence and persecution towards Mak Nyah (transgender women) in Malaysia. It was founded by Nisha Ayub, who also co-founded Seed Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides support for the trans, homeless and other marginalised communities of Malaysia. This year, the groups Queer Lapis, Jejaka, Garabtaag and Justice For Sisters have been fundraising to help LGBTQIA+ refugees and migrants in Malaysia secure housing, healthcare, food and employment. Legal Dignity, meanwhile, is a queer-affirming feminist initiative sharing legal resources.
Healy is protected by his status – he can return to the UK, where will face nothing more than a travel ban or slap on the wrist. He flies into a country, makes a clumsy provocation, leaves damage in his wake – then posts memes poking fun at the cancellation and at Malaysia from behind the safety of his phone screen.
To Healy and his fans: if you want to actually help LGBTQ+ people in Malaysia, please consider funding the aforementioned organisations. And to other western artists whose intentions come from a place of solidarity: if we want to stand with causes that affect cultures other than our own, we must think deeply about our position of privilege, utilising our voice in a meaningful, respectful way. Listen to the folks in the countries you want to stand with, the ones whose real experiences are affected by these issues, and think about the repercussions of your actions. No one person is a representative of a whole community, but if we can weave our voices together and put our egos aside – rockstar or otherwise – we can slowly make meaningful change.

When has the classic trope of high school romance drama unfolding while on a trip to a different country ever failed us? The Lizzie Maguire Movie got it right in Italy, XO Kitty went all the way to South Korea, and now, Heartstopper is heading to Paris with its second season. In the first full-length trailer for the new season, which hits Netflix on Aug. 3, Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) get to work out the kinks in their still very new relationship outside of the watchful eyes of their usual school grounds. Sure, it’s a cliché, but what better place to figure out what the heart really wants than in the City of Love?
“I want you to come out when and how you want to,” Charlie tells Nick in the preview. Once they’ve touched down in Paris, they’re at least able to escape the constant bombardment of questions and speculations about their sexuality from everyone back home. Still, Charlie is thinking ten steps ahead to make sure Nick has an easier journey than he did. “I can make sure Nick doesn’t have to deal with what I did,” he states in a voiceover during a moment when they spot an out couple holding hands, inadvertently encouraging them to do the same. “I can protect him.”
And they’re not the only ones still trying to figure out the best way to navigate new relationships as they clash with the more internal changes of the coming-of-age experience. In the clip, Nick and Charlie’s friend group grapples with unreciprocated confessions of love and awkward crush encounters. “They are gonna be a handful today,” two of the chaperoning teachers declare to one another.
This time around, Heartstopper is hoping to keep all of its queer young adult drama on-screen and offline. Following the grand success of the show’s first season, Connor faced backlash for accepting a role in a straight romantic comedy, with people accusing the then 18-year-old actor of queerbaiting. When the pressure eventually became too much, the actor declared that he would be leaving Twitter for a while, but not before he unveiled: “I’m bi. Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”

The show was queer at its conception and has gone above and beyond to maintain the representation and important content that made the book series so popular. So it’s doubly ironic that a show that encourages teens to figure out their sexualities on their own terms and literally has quotes like ‘Don’t feel like you have to come out yet before you are ready’ would have its main cast member so publically and rudely questioned.”

First, the director wrote, "Hello. Thank you so much for enjoying the music video. However, I do not prefer to explain every detail of my projects once they are completed, and so I'm afraid I cannot respond to every mystery and speculations surrounding them. To shed light on what I can, I hoped to depict a story of 'rumors' in 'ETA'. Jungkook, the youngest member BTS, has reacted after his solo single Seven topped Billboard Hot 100. Earlier this month, Jungkook released the music video of his song Seven, which featured him alongside actor Han So-hee. The song also featured rapper Latto.
