What’s it like to dine at Asia’s ‘best’ restaurant? - CNN

CNN  —

When highlighting how the Japanese capital represents the pinnacle of global dining excellence, British chef Daniel Calvert of Sézanne once opted to use a soccer reference.

“Tokyo really is the Champions League of cooking,” he said.

Well if that’s the case, Calvert’s restaurant in the elegant surrounds of the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi has just won the culinary equivalent of the famed European competition, having been acclaimed not only as the finest in Tokyo, but also across all of the region after taking the number one spot at the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2024 event last week.

It’s a remarkable achievement for a chef hailing from a small town south of London who cooks French cuisine, often with Japanese produce, in Tokyo.

But his career and trajectory have always been defined by global experience, exposure and a passion for embracing other cultures and cuisines.

Back in 2006, Australian Chef Shane Osborn of Hong Kong’s acclaimed Arcane hired Calvert to work at his two Michelin-starred Pied à Terre restaurant in London.

“Daniel’s talent was clear from an early age and his path to success has been anticipated by many who’ve worked with him over the years,” Osborn told CNN.

“His dedication to the craft of haute cuisine and respect for the profession make him a great ambassador for the industry, while he and his cuisine uniquely stand out in a heavily crowded global market.”

British chef Daniel Calvert's resume includes stints in London, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Further experience on Calvert’s seriously impressive resumé includes a stint at Chef Thomas Keller’s famed Per Se in New York, where he became the youngest ever sous-chef, aged just 23, as well as Employee of The Year. The culinary Holy Grail of Paris followed, with a stint at Epicure, which like Per Se is also a three Michelin-starred restaurant.

His global culinary journey continued with a move to Hong Kong and the contemporary Parisian bistro Belon, where he earned the restaurant a Michelin star and reached fourth place on the list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Now in the Japanese capital, his laser focus on execution, excellence and attention to detail has brought two Michelin stars in just three years as well as his latest accolade.

“I’ve been lucky to travel and make correct decisions - or good decisions - at the right times,” Calvert told CNN.

“A lot of the success that we have had is from traveling and being open-minded – and making friends with people from all over. Traveling across the world, as an Englishman, we are very much a blank slate - we’re sponges.”

One-of-a-kind dishes

Sézanne – named for a small town of the same name in France’s Champagne region – is set in the heart of Tokyo’s business district, with the country’s famed high-speed shinkansen trains passing into the adjacent Tokyo Station a few floors below.

However, the frenetic urban rush outside feels far removed from the sleek, calm and minimalist feel of the dining room by Hong Kong designer André Fu.

Contemporary art, Baccarat crystal and a Christofle champagne trolley remind guests that this is serious fine dining – lunch menus start from 27,800 yen ($185), dinner from 50,000 yen ($330) – but the young service team also ensures a lack of pretension, working with warmth, humor and no trace of stuffiness.

Sézanne's morel mushrooms with wild garlic and botan ebi.

Calvert, his executive sous chef Ashley Caley and the team work to craft dishes based on the finest produce available that day, although some signatures feature regularly. What’s critical for Calvert is the uniqueness of what he serves.

“The most important thing to me is that the guest is having a dish that they can only have here,” he says.

Guests facing the kitchen get to see them at work, a quiet study in total focus, concentration and intensity.

The first bite served is a gougère, a savory choux pastry filled with liquid 48-month aged Comté cheese. In a way, it’s a culinary calling card representing perfect technique around a proudly French ingredient.

Another is clearly more Japanese, where shima ebi, a type of shrimp from off the northern island of Hokkaido, is marinated in vin jaune wine from France’s Jura region, then deftly topped with a shimmering jelly also crafted from the vin jaune. Served on a silver platter, it’s a dazzling dish in every way.

Amadai, known as tilefish in English, comes from Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture and is exquisitely cooked to ensure the perfect texture and bite of crispy skin, before being enveloped in a rich sauce with lemon thyme, sake kasu – a type of mash leftover from sake production – and juice from the fish bones.

Fragrant and earthy, a morel mushroom is then somehow stuffed with botan ebi, another type of shrimp, served with wild garlic and a shrimp hollandaise sauce. It is crowned by a perfect thin disc, again for textural contrast, where the same technique for making gyoza dumplings somehow mixes shrimp oil, morel mushrooms, flour and bouillon.

At Sézanne, there’s never an unnecessary garnish or flourish. Everything is on the plate for a reason – the foremost of which is always flavor.

As you’d expect, a world-class drinks program accompanies meals, from a wide range of Champagnes and legendary vintages to an impressive array of alcohol-free pairings, all carefully curated by sommelier Nobuhide Otsuka.

Sézanne offers finely crafted neo-French cuisine made with top-quality local ingredients.

Desserts are equally show-stopping, most memorably a rice pudding that spans the globe thanks to vibrant segments of stunning Japanese citrus and a light Italian zabaglione custard.

How good is it? Stop-you-in-your-tracks kind of good. Drop the spoon kind of good.

As for the chef? Calvert is happy to modestly take the considerable accolade of the best restaurant in Asia with a pinch of salt, as it were.

“I can safely say we’re 100% better – maybe 1,000% – than we were this time last year,” he says. “I’m not saying we deserve it more than anyone. But I think that the team’s work, this year - in my eyes, they fully deserve it.

“We can’t let this award change things for Sézanne because the most important thing is our guests - we have so many regulars, we want to make sure that we are still there for them. Consistency is the key. Anyone can do something great once. Success lies in doing the same things over and over again, striving for excellence in every plate.”

Han So Hee, Ryu Joon Yeol call it quits on controversial romance - The News International

Han So Hee, Ryu Joon Yeol go separate ways, weeks after going public
Han So Hee, Ryu Joon Yeol go separate ways, weeks after going public

Han So Hee and Ryu Joon Yeol recently confirmed that the two have officially broken up, just two weeks after their dating news went public.

Ryu Joon Yeol’s representatives confirmed the big news, admitting: "It's true they broke up. We ask for your understanding as we have nothing else to say except to confirm the breakup."

Their relationship was subject to various controversies after the pair was spotted together in Hawaii, which was later followed by Ryu Joon Yeol’s former girlfriend Hyeri’s cryptic Instagram Story.

According to fans, Hyeri expressed disappointment over their relationship with a caption that read “Funny.”

However, the celebrity couple faced backlash for allegedly “overlapping” relationships or “transit love.”

The two denied rumors, with Han So Hee issuing a lengthy letter on social media.

She insisted that Ryu Joon Yeol and Hyeri were already broken up with mutual well-wishes long before Han So Hee started dating him.

Claiming that she never interacted with Ryu Jun Yeol before then, Han So Hee confirmed that the two do not share any mutual acquaintances.

The South Korean actress deleted the post, few minutes after sharing it, later followed with a public apology surrounding all the drama.

Lee Bum Soo's wife Lee Yun Jin continues to expose the reasons for her divorce from her husband - allkpop

The feud between actor Lee Bum Soo and his wife, Lee Yoon Jin, continues.

Last week, interpreter Lee Yun Jin, publicly known as Lee Bum Soo's wife wrote a lengthy post on her social media pleading with the actor to cooperate in their divorce. Rumors of their divorce surfaced in December last year and were confirmed two weeks ago when news media outlets confirmed that Lee Bum Soo and his wife were going through divorce mediation.

A few days following the divorce news, Lee Yoon Jin began making social media posts revealing that her marriage with Lee Bum Soo was not easy, and she claimed that she had no contact with her son.

Then on March 28, Lee Yoon Jin exposed more secrets about her husband and claimed that she was threatened by her husband's side to make false claims about their divorce.

She wrote through her Instagram story, "My shouting finally reached the other party, and I received a call from the other party's lawyer. The opposing lawyer conveyed the client's intention, saying, 'If you publish an article saying that your claim is not true, I will consider it.' Haha, what a brilliant plan devised in just a week. My writing is based on facts and 'evidence.' Therefore, I cannot publish an article stating it's not true. I apologize for causing a disturbance. I will now resolve this quietly in court based on the 'evidence'."

She continued to reveal the reason for their divorce with a capture of an article that said, "Lee Bum Soo X Lee Yoon Jin reasons for divorce garner attention... 'Not extramarital affair but personality difference'." She refuted the article title saying, "Someone said just fall in love loudly but the difference in 'personality' is when dealing with 'sex'," and subtly hinting about extramarital issues.

Korean netizens commented, "I'm so worried about the kids," "omg," "Wow, this is so shocking," "I guess there was something dirtier that he did other than an extramarital affair," "What is going on,"  "She must've been so frustrated, posting all these things online," "I never liked him," "Hope things get resolved well," " The story is really a shocker," and "This is so difficult. I hope she stays safe."

What we’re reading: writers and readers on the books they enjoyed in March - The Guardian

Francesca Specter, author and journalist

I was lucky enough to be sent an early copy of David Nicholls’ forthcoming novel, You Are Here, a publication well-timed for those who adored the recent One Day Netflix adaptation. Nicholls’ latest book has long been on my radar, as I’ve written extensively about its central themes of solitude and loneliness.

You Are Here’s lovers, Marnie and Michael, are aged 38 and 42, out of the heat of wedding-and-baby season yet far from later life. This meant a refreshing absence of typical romcom tropes (eg proposals, weddings, a birth). Instead, the plot is framed around a coast-to-coast walk, while dramatic tension is created by the spectre of an estranged wife. The romance has sincerity and authenticity, notably in a river wrestling scene where one party is wearing zip-away waterproof shorts/trousers. There were echoes of Curtis Sittenfeld’s Romantic Comedy, another book I loved.

For my neighbourhood book club, I read Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea, a feminist, postcolonial prequel to Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. Antoinette Cosway, Mr Rochester’s “madwoman in the attic” first wife (whom he renames Bertha), is a powerful narrator with timeless resonance: “There are more ways than one of being happy, better perhaps to be peaceful and contented and protected.” It made me rethink the romanticisation of Jane Eyre’s Mr Rochester (last January, we read Wuthering Heights … same story with Heathcliff).

While I’ve never loved the short story medium, a friend convinced me that Alice Munro’s Runaway would be the exception. He was right. The Nobel prize-winning author’s prose is pithy with unforgettable details, like a lost goat’s reappearance amid the celestial halo of a car headlight. I enjoyed how several characters reappear across stories, too, like encountering an old friend.

Helen, Guardian reader

I have been reading Other Women by Emma Flint, a crime novel that is based on the real-life murder of Emily Beilby Kaye by her married lover in the 1920s. It is beautifully written, but harrowing and full of tension. Kaye is reimagined as Beatrice, a woman who falls in love with a colleague, having been “left over” after the first world war – she was what was considered to be marriageable age when most eligible men were away at war. It was interesting to read about a character based on such women, who strived to make a life and career and were almost invisible in society.

Alba Arikha, author

It’s been 10 years since Michael Cunningham wrote a book and, being a fan, I awaited his most recent one, Day, with trepidation. Over three consecutive Aprils, from 2019 to 2021, we follow a Brooklyn family during and after the onset of Covid. Just like in his other work, there is something haunting about Cunningham’s writing. It makes one acutely aware of the imperceptible fragility of life: the way we speak to each other, who we are, and what we make of it. The book is a powerful example of dysfunctionality, and what happens when cues are missed or ignored. But it’s also about desire, the spaces we attempt to inhabit and escape from, not always successfully.

Because I’ve always wanted to read him, and in preparation for a writing class I’ll be teaching this summer in Greece, I dived into a collection of Isaac Babel’s short stories, Of Sunshine and Bedbugs. I found myself airlifted 100 years back into the ebullient, rich and colourful port city of Odessa, in the company of Jewish thugs, sex workers, cart drivers, milkmaids and rabbis. Though pogroms loom in the background, humour and irreverence preside.

I began reading How to Make a Bomb by Rupert Thomson on a flight from London to NYC and finished it just before landing. The midlife crisis of Philip, a history professor, and his decision to “dispense with structure, and open himself to possibility and chance” is completely gripping. There are no full stops in this beautifully written novel, and as a result, the fragmentary rhythm catapults one breathlessly forwards.

For nearly two decades, Ann Wroe has written obituaries for the Economist. I remember my late mother mentioning her with quiet admiration. Which is one of the reasons why I picked up her book Lifescapes. And I found that same quietude rustling through the pages, alternating between prose, poetry, memoir and biography. “The smallest things may offer vital clues,” Wroe writes of her obituaries, which she calls “catching souls”. Chronologies do not interest her. But those clues, from objects to images, strangers to ghosts, the sacredness in blood to the sound of snow, do. There is a magical quality to her unusual, almost ethereal writing. A soul catcher she is and I’m still thinking about it.

Two Hours by Alba Arikha is published by Eris (£14.99). To support the Guardian and Observer order your copy at guardianbookshop.com. Delivery charges may apply

Rupert, Guardian reader

As a teenager in the 60s I followed Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor’s relationship along with the rest of the world. Now I have had the chance to revisit the subject again, by reading Erotic Vagrancy by Roger Lewis, a fascinating double biography that delves deeper into the lives of that (in)famous couple and all of the people who surrounded them. There is a relentless, almost obsessive quality to Lewis’s writing that had me reading well into the night. I highly recommended this book.

‘I believe it’s best…’: Kim Sae Ron finally responds to dating rumors with Kim Soo Hyun after controversial photo update - PINKVILLA

Kim Soo Hyun got embroiled in a dating rumor earlier this week when actress Kim Sae Ron shared an up-and-close story featuring the actor.

Though shortly after, she deleted the late-night Instagram update, it was already circulated rapidly, fueling the relationship controversy amongst the stars. While Kim Soo Hyun’s agency quashed the rumors in a swift response, the actress maintained her silence for a while.

Kim Sae Ron reacts to photo with Kim Soo Hyun amid dating controversy

On March 25, a Korean media outlet reported that Kim Sae Ron was preparing a statement, and she would convey it publicly as soon as it was organized. Netizens were eagerly waiting to hear the side of her story.

However, a recent report on March 27 disclosed Kim Sae Ron’s withdrawal from the same. “I have given it an extensive thought. But I believe it’s best not to comment anything as it’s not an official position.”

Notably, Kim Soo Hyun’s agency GOLDMEDALIST shut down the dating rumors as soon as they surfaced, clearing the backstory behind the ‘intimate’ photo of the duo, that somehow showcased their comradery.

“The dating rumor is completely groundless as the photo was taken when Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron shared the same agency”, a representative said while vowing to take legal actions against any malicious slanders that damage the actor’s public image.

More about dating controversy between Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron

Meanwhile, the Bloodhounds actress was affiliated with GOLDMEDALIST until December 2022. According to media records, she hasn’t yet signed with a new agency, following her contract expirations.

Upon her controversial Instagram story, many people hold her accountable for trying to ruin the Queen of Tears actor’s reputation.

During the period, while she maintained her silence, many acquaintances of her denied any romantic involvement between the duo, adding more confusion and complexity to the situation.  An anonymous informant also reported that the two didn’t share a close bond even when the actress was under GOLDMEDALIST.

However, despite not having an official representative, Kim Sae Ron seems to be surrounded by the same level of support as Kim Soo Hyun

Though her stepping back from releasing a statement is not completely understood by the netizens, it might be to prevent further escalation amidst the already existing backlash and controversy.

Meanwhile, the reason for Kim Sae Ron's shocking action, which charged the speculation, remains unknown.

'I am no clown': Billy Porter on how it's taken the industry over two decades to take him seriously - Sky News

Billy Porter says he's struggled to be taken seriously over the years - as he warns critics that while he "may wear dresses on the red carpet, make no mistake, I am no clown".

The Emmy-winning actor - whose movies include Cinderella, The Intern and Like A Boss - tells Sky News it's taken around 25 years to be treated like a professional artist.

"My brand, once I got in, has been 'fabulous', 'Billy Porter is fabulous', 'Billy Porter does fabulous'.

"I am a very serious human being - and the conversation that I am having with the world is 'fabulous' and 'serious' do co-exist."

His latest movie is Our Son, alongside Welsh actor Luke Evans, a moving drama that tells the story of a same-sex couple navigating the difficulties of co-parenting through a divorce.

After 13-years together, Nicky and Gabriel find themselves squabbling over the custody of their eight-year-old son, Owen.

Porter and Evans also collaborated on a song for the film's soundtrack - Always Be My Man - which they performed at its Tribeca Festival premiere last year.

More on Billy Porter

Porter says he hopes the film will help change some perceptions about him - and about the nature of gay relationships, too.

Image: (R-L) Porter and Luke Evans. Pic: Universal

'Let's talk about what happens after'

"To have it be about humans - not a heterosexual, not a homosexual - but the breakdown of a human marriage, was really important to me.

"Because as a 54-year-old black, out, queer - whatever you want to call it - gay man, who's been in the business for over 30 years, I've been watching 'coming out stories' for 30 years.

"I am tired of them. We got that story. Let's now talk about what happens after coming out."

The actor thinks the world has come a long way when it comes to how same-sex relationships are treated and played out on screen.

He says we should "honour" that, before complaining about where we're not.

Porter became the first openly gay man to win an Emmy award for Best Actor in a drama series for his role in Pose back in 2019.

But the star says he was deeply disappointed by the energy around the film's release in the US, late last year.

Pic: Universal
Image: Pic: Universal

'It hurts my feelings'

Released with little fanfare, it's been compared to divorce dramas including Kramer Vs Kramer and Marriage Story - and largely judged to be wanting.

Porter says: "They just threw it out. Nobody saw it. Nobody even knows it's out. And that hurts my feelings. It does. It deserves better than that."

He goes on: "There was no care. With that said, it does not diminish the value - this will be there and people will be able to find it.

"Our movie - because it's a movie - will have a life. And I'm excited about that life. I'm excited about the release in the UK and Europe. It's already having a life that didn't exist [here in] America."

Porter says the film wasn't given a chance to really take off in the US, but hopes it may do just that here for its UK release.

Our Son is out now on digital release.

However, sharing with fellow culinarians, from around the world, was always something close to my heart. Treasures are meant to be shared, and here we are!" said Giancarla Bodoni, Monteverdi Culinary Director, in a statement.

The five-night itinerary, which will run from September 24-29 2024, will involve all sorts of activities that will make a foodie’s heart sing and stomach growl, from chef-led dinners, small-group cooking demonstrations hosted by the celebrity chefs and food-centric Tuscany-area excursions, such as white truffle foraging and learning the art of cheese making. There’ll also be activities such as wine tastings, concerts, family-style meals, farm visits and more. But it’s not an opportunity many will have the chance to experience: Reservations open in April and there’ll be a total of 30 spots available.

While this getaway is something of a splurge, it’s one that even the celebrity chefs seem pretty excited to be involved in. "Hm, let me get this right... I get to stay and cook and teach and eat this fall at Monteverdi, Tuscany, which is one of my favorite getaways in all of Italy, and I get to do all this with Missy Robbins, one of my favorite chefs in America? What's not to love? It's an experience I can guarantee you won't want to miss,” said Chef Nancy Silverton in an email.

This year’s program is a follow-up to a similar one last year, which partnered with Dominique Crenn and Nancy Silverton, so while this culinary journey may feel like a once-in-a-lifetime trip, it actually is something someone can consider making an annual pilgrimage. If truffle hunting and cheesemaking with celebrity chefs in the Tuscan countryside is your type of thing, it is.

Lee Beom-soo leads 'grotesque double life,' estranged wife says - The Korea JoongAng Daily

Actor Lee Beom-soo and his now-estranged wife, Lee Yoon-jin, pose for a photo at a red carpet event in October 2017. [NEWS1]

Actor Lee Beom-soo’s wife, Lee Yoon-jin, aired out the couple’s marriage and family troubles through social media over the weekend, accusing the actor of being unfaithful and uncooperative during the couple's divorce proceedings and in the rearing of their children.

Lee Yoon-jin accused the actor of evading legal divorce procedures and refusing to communicate with her in a post uploaded to Instagram on Saturday.

“It has been almost 10 months since [Lee Beom-soo] evaded [his part in] an agreed-upon separation and the agreement for divorce, and the divorce mediation has fallen through,” Lee Yoon-jin said.

She claimed that she and the couple's daughter have been banned from entering the family's home in Seoul since last year. Lee Beom-soo reportedly lives with the couple's son in the city while Lee Yoon-jin resides with their daughter overseas.

Lee Yoon-jin spoke to the difficulty of reaching her son following her separation from her husband in the comments of the post, replying to users who asked about the 10-year-old.

“If there is anyone who knows how Da-eul is doing, please send me a DM,” she said.

Lee Yoon-jin also blamed Lee Beom-soo for the divorce.

“[He has lived] a grotesque double life, keeping furtive hobbies, and kept things to himself that are [private to the extent of being] locked up; he even hid the mobile phones he was using in socks,” Lee Yoon-jin’s post read. “He has deceived and betrayed his family.”

She further laid out grievances with her mother-in-law, who she claims told her parents to “raise their X of a daughter well.”

Lee Beom-soo’s agency, Y1 Entertainment, released a statement later in the day denying Lee Yoon-jin’s claims, and said the actor would refute his estranged wife’s claims in court, without responding to individual reports.

“There is a lot of information in Lee Yoon-jin’s social media post that is different from the truth,” Y1 Entertainment said.

The couple tied the knot in May 2010 and has a son and daughter. They initiated divorce procedures in March of this year after 14 years of marriage.

Actor Lee Beom-soo made his debut with a supporting role in the film “Let’s Look at the Sky Sometimes” (1990). Since then, he has been frequenting both the silver and the small screens, taking lead roles in drama series including “On Air” (2008) and “Giant” (2010) and films like “Bungee Jumping of Their Own” (2001) and “Operation Chromite” (2016).

The latest addition to his filmography is “The Roundup: No Way Out” from last year, the third installment of the “The Outlaws” (2017) franchise. He will also appear in the fourth installment, “The Roundup: Punishment,” which releases on April 24.

Lee Yoon-jin is a translator and interpreter. She has also worked as a news presenter at OBS Gyeongin Television, and as a publicist and global project manager for celebrities including Rain and Blackpink.

The couple’s marriage and family life with their children was documented on KBS’s reality show “The Return of Superman” (2013-). Lee Beom-soo won the Excellence Award in the variety show category at KBS’s Entertainment Awards in 2016 for his appearance in the program.

Actor Lee Bum Soo's wife exposes the difficult marriage she had with Lee Bum Soo & pleads with him to divorce her - allkpop

Interpreter Lee Yun Jin, publicly known as the wife of actor Lee Bum Soo, wrote a lengthy post on her SNS on March 23 KST, pleading with Lee Bum Soo to cooperate with their divorce.

Lee Yun Jin wrote, "Evading separation by agreement, ignoring requests for consensual divorce, failure to settle during divorce mediation, it's been 10 months. My blood is drying up and my body is withering, but if the divorce goes to trial, they say it can take up to 2 years..."

She continued, "So Eul has been banned from entering the family home in Seoul solely due to the fact that she chose to attend middle school overseas. As for me, who dared to request a divorce with the head of the household, I cannot enter the home unless it is by permission and while under complete surveillance by the head. Please, just let me have my glasses and So Eul's books. I have astigmatism..."

Lee Yun Jin further wrote, "I have no one to blame. I went through with this marriage when everyone tried to stop me. So I wanted to show everyone that I was living well. The past 14-years of my marriage was very different from the refined image that I showed in the advertisements. And yet, I cannot deny that there were meaningful moments. When the man that I had promised to spend eternity with faced legal battles for tax reasons and against other civil and criminal lawsuits, I spent countless nights staying up, studying the law to protect him as his representative. While getting tossed around, I learned so much, and I'm thankful for that. I grew stronger as a person. Putting out fires and taking out the garbage, that was the work I was to fulfill in this relationship. I'm confident that I did my due part in labor, enough to pay off my rent and meals to the head of the household."

She also stated, "When a couple is struggling, you help each other out, that's a given. When times were difficult, I did not hesitate to sell off our wedding ring and gifts. When he seemed like he was going through difficult times that he could not open up to me about, I worked harder. To be honest, we overcame our financial difficulties by emptying the bank account of my own parents, who are facing seventy soon. But in return, my parents had to hear my mother-in-law insulting me to their faces, saying, 'Make sure that b***h daughter of yours stays in line.' I wanted to keep those insults, 'this b***h', 'that b***h', to myself, but in the end, I let my parents hear them too. I hurt my own parents. I've lost the right to face them."

Regarding her husband Lee Bum Soo, Lee Yun Jin wrote, "His strange and uncanny double life, his secret hobbies, all those valuables he kept hidden away with a padlock, the multiple phones he kept hidden in his socks... he went to such great lengths to deceive and betray his family. I do not care to know more. He has been stalling for the past year, evading confrontation. No one enjoys undergoing divorce. And I'm sure no one wants to turn 15-years of marriage into nothing more than gossip that is blown away in the wind. As the wife of a public figure and as the mother of my beloved children, I lived each day of my life challenging my limits."

Finally, Lee Yun Jin said, "I'm writing this in the hopes that my shouts will finally reach that person, who will not budge no matter what, stuck in the ground like a boulder. I'm embarrassed. But knowing that our paths can continue to cross for the rest of our lives in one way or another, I implore you to open up the door to your heart. This is not something you can solve simply by cutting off monetary support and locking the doors. If there is anyone out there who can reach him, please, deliver my words of sincerity to him. I hope that my shouts will finally be heard."

Lee Bum Soo and Lee Yun Jin married in 2010 and have a daughter and a son.

Mouly Surya Reframes Indonesian History in 'This City Is a Battlefield' and Comes Up With a 'Casablanca'-Like American Classic (EXCLUSIVE) - Yahoo News Australia

After putting female-led Asian genre cinema on the global map with ‘Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts,” Indonesian auteur Mouly Surya has stepped into the big time. On the studio level, she is putting the final touches to her Jessica Alba-starring film “Trigger Warning” for Netflix, while nearer home she is in post-production on “This City Is a Battlefield,” her biggest Asian production to date.

More from Variety

“Battlefield” (aka “Perang Kota”) represents several firsts for the Indonesia-based, Australian educated Surya. As well as being her most ambitious film in her home country, it is her first book-to-film adaptation, her first history-based picture and the first with a male protagonist.

The narrative is set in the years shortly after WWII, at a time when The Netherlands was waging a new war and trying to recapture Indonesia, its former colony previously known as the Dutch East Indies. The male hero, portrayed by Chicco Jericho, accepts a mission to kill an important Dutch official. By his side is a wealthy, younger man (portrayed by Jerome Kurnia) eager to take on the underground mission, but one who is also trying to win the older man’s wife (Ariel Tatum).

“The novelist Mochtar Lubis is incredibly well-known and I had his book ‘A Road With No End’ for a long time before reading it. But reading the first few pages I was struck how visual it was. I could see those first scenes in my head and before even finishing the book I told my producer and husband [Rama Adi] that this would make a great movie,” Surya told Variety.

The pair planned to shoot it in 2020. But first the pandemic intervened. Then Surya accepted the offer to make “Trigger Warning.” She used the delays to refine the script and went through nine further drafts.

Telling a story set in a time before she was born and in an era that has been quietly written out of Indonesian history books proved a challenge.

“Initially, I was shocked to read about the Gurkhas [Nepalese soldiers allied with the U.K.] fighting with the British in support of the Dutch trying to recolonize us [after the expulsion of the Japanese army]. I was not taught that at school,” says Surya.

Surya’s adaptation opens in Yogyakarta (then Jogjakarta) in 1947, two years before independence and at a moment when the future president Sukarno had departed for Jakarta, the capital. With the city in a feverish state, Surya’s characters are involved in political resistance and a tug of love.

“It has a historical setting, but it is not a history film. I’m trying to have my own perspective,” Surya says. “I approached it more as a neoclassical war drama. Like an American classic. Like ‘Casablanca.’ There’s an urban war going on and each character has a mission.”

Getting the tone right also required effort. “It was a time when Indonesians were much more like Europeans than they are now. My uncle and my father spoke Dutch fluently. Now, few people do. And, so, I had to remember the styles of my parents’ generation. My uncle used to wear a tuxedo to go to parties, for example. I had to remember their mannerisms, the kind that are not used any more,” says Surya.

“All my four previous films, including the American one, have female protagonists. That’s what I’m known for. So, one of the things that attracted me to ‘Battlefield’ was that it is not something I usually do,” says Surya. “But, I would argue, it still has a strong female perspective.”

The production of “Battlefield” could scarcely be more different from the single financier Netflix studio picture. Surya describes the budget only as “ambitious, by Indonesian standards.”

“After I shot [“Trigger Warning”] in America and came back to the script again, it totally changed my perspective. I wondered if I’d been self-censoring. Had I been limiting myself because of the limitations in my industry? So, I tried to say, ‘let’s go a little crazy’ and not be afraid to do things,” she says.

“Battlefield” has three accredited Indonesian production companies and international co-producers from an additional six countries – Singapore, France, The Netherlands, Norway, The Philippines and Cambodia – as well as soft money from eight European and Asian institutions and funds.

Surya says she valued the co-production partners not just for their financial contributions, but also their creative input. “I enjoyed the way that with Isabelle [Glachant] and Anthony [Chen] we would go back and forth about the film The film is mine. I knew that I had the final cut, but they were challenging me. I actually found that actually very easy. When they challenged the ideas and shook me up, maybe it’s not that good of an idea in the first place,” says Surya.

The co-production also gave the film an experienced international crew, including French sound designer (Vincent Villa) and American and Singaporean editors Rob Grigsby Wilson and Natalie Soh.

With “Trigger Warning” completed and set for a summer release, Surya is now throwing herself into the post-production of “Battlefield,” which will be completed only later this year.

She’s also enjoying the duality of being attached to various Hollywood projects while also writing the script for her next Indonesian production. “I’m developing stuff [in the U.S.] and have things I’m attached to, but it is a different process,” says Surya. “I’m writing my next script for another Indonesian movie. And hope there won’t be another six or seven-year gap.”

Ryu Jun Yeol and Hyeri's relationship reality revealed; accusations of 'Love Triangle' and 'Transfer' deb - The Times of India

The love life of actor Ryu Jun Yeol has become the subject of intense speculation, with accusations of a ‘love triangle controversy’ involving his ex-girlfriend Hyeri and his alleged new flame, actress Han So Hee. The situation took a turn as many accused Ryu Jun Yeol of executing what's colloquially termed a ‘transfer’ - swiftly moving on from one relationship to another.

The saga unfolded with revelations from Hyeri herself, who asserted in her statement addressing the matter that despite officially parting ways with Ryu Jun Yeol in November 2023, they had maintained communication. Their relationship, spanning eight years, had ostensibly extended beyond its formal end, with both parties agreeing to ongoing discussions about their shared history. However, the plot thickened when Hyeri discovered through media reports that Ryu Jun Yeol had started on a romantic journey with Han So Hee.
The public outcry was swift, with netizens accusing Ryu Jun Yeol of stringing Hyeri along with false hopes. A report by TV Daily on March 21, further fanned the flames, citing sources close to both individuals who revealed that their interactions had been sparse, limited to a single meeting in 2023. Allegedly, their relationship had been teetering on the brink for some time, with the official breakup only formalized in November.

According to Koreaboo, "They only met up just once in the past year. They both simply put off announcing the breakup. They decided to both take time to think about it in February 2023", shared a source privy to the situation.
According to these sources, what some termed a ‘break’ was essentially a euphemism for a breakup. As Hyeri focused on filming her movie Victory in Geoje, geographical distance led to the emotional chasm between them. Rumors of their split began circulating in June, worsened when Ryu Jun Yeol failed to mark Hyeri's birthday, fueling speculation. Although they vehemently denied the breakup through their respective agencies in August 2023, insiders claim they merely postponed a public acknowledgment.
The narrative presented by these sources posits that their prolonged relationship dynamics made it challenging to publicly declare a split. Moreover, while Ryu Jun Yeol agreed to further discussions with Hyeri, it didn't signify a desire to reignite their romance.

"It’s not a one-sided breakup. They only met once last year. They had already grown apart. Wouldn’t Hyeri have known that when he said 'let’s talk about it more,' it was just a formality? It’s too much to guess that it was a 'transfer'", the sources contended.

On March 16, Han So-hee confirmed the rumors regarding her relationship with Ryu Jun-yeol.
