Ten's New Era: The K-Pop Singer Promises To "Keep Changing" On Celebratory New Release - The GRAMMYs

K-pop singer Ten wants to be seen for who he is right now. "But that might be hard, because no one can really understand each other, right?" he tells GRAMMY.com via Zoom, an inquisitive smile forming on his lips. As one of the industry’s most entrancing artists, he is mindful of the gap between self and others, artists and fans, private and public. "You might not really understand yourself," he adds.

But still, he hopes that, at least for 3 minutes and 41 seconds, people can see what he calls his current "real me": a sleek, futuristic performer, drawing pristine lines with his body and casting spells with his voice on "Birthday," his latest solo effort.

To Ten, expressing himself is like breathing. Born Chittaphon Leechaiyapornkul in Bangkok, Thailand, the 26-year-old was influenced by his mother to explore the arts and sports since childhood. He speaks five languages (Thai, English, Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin), but fluency is a word that overflows to many other areas in his life: singing, dancing, drawing, taking photos. He blooms in mutable environments — a pattern that repeats itself throughout his journey.

The wistful "Birthday," for example, is part of NCT LAB, a series of releases by K-pop collective NCT, which currently holds more than 20 members in various units, fixed and flexible. Ten debuted as part of NCT U in 2016, but he is also a member of SuperM (a supergroup formed by members of different acts under SM Entertainment) and of Chinese group WayV, as well as a budding soloist. In 2017, he released his first solo track, the hazy "Dream in a Dream," followed by 2018’s EDM-centric "New Heroes" and 2021’s laidback pop "Paint Me Naked" — each a screenshot of who he was and what inspired him at that moment.

Diving into this "new era" for the singer, GRAMMY.com caught up with Ten to discuss his current self, letting intuition lead the way, and a new perspective on the sultry lyrics of "Birthday."

You first performed "Birthday" on the reality show "Great Dance Crew." What made you want to release it as your own solo for NCT LAB?

I received the song when I was working on [my previous solo] "Paint Me Naked," but at that time I was, like, "I don't think I'm in the right mood for 'Birthday' so let’s keep it for a later opportunity." After "Paint Me Naked," I went abroad to China, I worked on the reality show, and then I [thought] Okay, I think I'm ready to perform this song, but just a teaser

So I did it, and when I came back to Korea, I was like, I need to release this song as soon as possible, because I was in the right state of mind. I'm feeling the lyrics and the mood of the song, and I always want to express myself in [my current] mood.

For my solo songs, I want myself to really get into the lyrics and be able to represent myself with the song.

Is there anything you want to say about the lyrics of "Birthday?"

Um… The lyrics are very sensual, but I hope people don't fixate on the words. I hope they can relate to their own story. And the emotions can be not to your lover, but to yourself, like, ‘I want every day to be my special day.’ You can hear it as me talking to myself, not to an opposite person.

Back in April, you posted some drawings on Instagram about "Birthday." Now, in the music video, there are some scenes that resemble those drawings — the veiled people almost kissing, the hands holding each other. Was it your idea to add them to the music video?

Oh, yes. I did participate in the [creation of the] atmosphere of the music video. I was thinking of myself dancing in a desert, like a small oasis, but that's going to be hard to film, right? So I just narrowed it down. I wanted to use a mirror, a water tank… If you see the first scene, there is a futuristic, wide platform, but at first it was a bathroom mirror. I was thinking about something very vintage, like a picture I saw on the internet, which was a bathroom with a dead robot [in it]. I was like, "I need that in my music video."

But then it became a futuristic platform?

Yes, yes. All the staff has helped me, they got a lot of my ideas and just made it into reality.

You’re also wearing that wonderful hat with a veil in the music video, and all of your dancers have their faces covered. Was it your intention to cover or conceal facial expressions?

That was my stylist’s idea, the see-through black sheets covering the dancers’ faces. If you see all my outfits, the first is a flowy, sensual outfit, but very minimal, very casual at the same time. The second one is a suit with armor on it, and what’s the third one? The white outfit. With that one, I wanted to represent a person who came from the future, so you can see that I had some piercings on me. But yeah, everyone around helped me, so I thank [them], my stylist, my director, all the staff.

Since we're talking about accessories, you're also wearing several rings and bracelets in that first outfit, and it gives your style an androgynous flair. Was leaving things ambiguous, in that sense, one of your goals?

This is the fun part, because before we film the music video, we just sit down and look at all the accessories that are laid out on the table and say, ‘Okay, let’s try that one on,’ and everyone goes, ‘Okay, no,’ or ‘Okay, yes,’ but [with these ones] I was just, ‘I need to put these on, and no one’s going to say no because I won't put it down.’ It's a lot of talking. We just prepare the basics, and then the small accessories, or makeup, or the nail art, it’s all [decided] at the shooting.

Even though you are part of NCT, SuperM, and WayV, you are also slowly building your distinct solo discography. What are some defining points of your artistry? Are there any elements that you always turn back to in your work?

There's no connection between each song, it’s just ‘me’ in that era. For example, in "Paint Me Naked" I was so chill at that time, it was like puberty. That's what I [was] at that moment, so I presented myself as "Paint Me Naked." And for "Birthday"... Maybe I've been watching too many romantic series and dramas, so I needed something that was very deep, very expressive. It’s what I'm into [now], and if I'm into this, I want to express myself in that way.

What series or dramas inspired you for "Birthday"?

So many. On Netflix, I just randomly watch movies, and I love watching animations. There's some sad [ones] that make you think after you watch them.

You have spoken in other interviews about how you have two sides. One is more cute and bright, and the other is more dark and mysterious. How do you think that they play out in your solo work?

I think they give more color to all my work and my character. I'm not stuck with one specific image, I keep changing. This time I [can] do a very deep, romantic, sensual song, but next time I can do something very hip-hop.

The things I watch really influence me a lot: animations, movies, or some picture that I found on my Instagram, those kinds of stuff. As you grow older, you just like change, right? You get into different stuff.

That’s true. When you look back to your first solo, "Dream in a Dream," what do you think about that time?

When I look back to every work I did, it's just… I don't remember that guy. [Laughs] That's me, but it's also not me in the present. But I appreciate that guy who did "Dream in a Dream," or "New Heroes," or "Paint Me Naked." It feels like experience. When I was 16, that's how much I had experienced in life, so I represented myself that way. And now, all the experiences that I faced come out as I do my solo stuff.

You are known to speak many languages, but all of your solos have been released in English. Is that the language that you feel more comfortable expressing yourself in?

I’ve grown up listening to a lot of English songs, and when I practice my vocals, I sing in English. I think English is easier for me to express my feelings. It's very straightforward, but it's up to the listener to analyze the lyrics, so I feel like I can just sing one simple sentence and create my own world inside [of it]. Different languages have their own charms, but English is [easier] for the listener to relate to their own story.

Have you ever tried to write your own songs?

Yes, I did. Last year I did a lot of sessions, like, making melodies, but I haven't created my own lyrics yet. I'm more into making melodies than lyrics. I think later on I will try to write my own songs, but right now I just enjoy making top lines and stuff.

On the other hand, you're one of the best dancers in K-pop. You make it seem like it’s the most effortless thing in the world. What goes on in your mind when you're dancing?

Thank you. Wow. Before, I would say that I think of a line in the water, or those kinds of elements, but right now I want to make something different from the past. There's so many choreographies that look the same, so when I dance I just think of how to make this one simple movement become more unique. This is what I've been working on lately. Trying to make the tiniest difference, but make it very unique.

You're also an artistic person in general. Is there a specific medium where you feel more comfortable with?

Each of them have their own space in me. I think of myself more as a performer than a singer, or a dancer, or a painter. I don't think of that. I'm just like, I'm going to perform, I want to express myself. That's the only thing I really focus on.

Taylor Swift Plays a Fully ‘Bejeweled’ Cinderella Escaping Laura Dern and Haim in New Music Video - Variety

Having not released a second of music or video imagery from “Midnights” prior to that album’s release four nights ago, Taylor Swift is making up for lost time. She’s released the second music video for a song from the album just days after the first, with “Bejeweled” hitting the Swift-isphere hot on the heels of “Anti-Hero” at the stroke of 12 (ET) Monday night. Watch the full clip, which co-stars Laura Dern, Dita von Teese and the three Haim sisters, below.

It’s a Cinderella story, although a prince — played briefly by producer/writer Jack Antonoff — figures into it even more briefly than in most versions of the fairy tale. Swift plays “House Wench Taylor,” who first appears as she is scrubbing up the vomit “Lady Este” (Este Haim) left behind after her drunken outing the night before. “Stepmommy” (Dern) and Ladies Alana and Danielle antagonize the suffering star even more rudely than in Disney’s versions — there’s no telling what Uncle Walt would have thought of the promise of “diamond tassel nipples” — before Swift transforms herself in a starfield made up of diamonds. She then ghosts the barely glimpsed Antonoff, maybe all the better to return to the giant cocktail glasses she was cavorting in with “Fairy Goddess” von Teese. Pat McGrath, one of the world’s most famous makeup artists, also puts in a cameo.

Haim taunts Taylor Swift in the prologue to Swift’s
“Bejeweled” music video

Discussing the video on “The Tonight Show,” airing on the east coast roughly around the same time the video was premiering on YouTube, Swift told Jimmy Fallon there are “a psychotic amount” of Easter eggs embedded in the visuals. “We have a PDF file for the Easter eggs in this video, because there are so many we could not keep track.”

In contrast to “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” as a song, is all about self-confidence, almost as an act of counter-programming to the highly touted self-effacement of the first single. It’s a breakup song, or at least a we-might-break-up song, but also the truly sparkliest number on the album, closer to the shiny heights of a “Lover” track like “Me” or “You Need to Calm Down” than any other tune on “Midnights.” Of all her songs about troubled relationships, it’s one of the least troubling. The message: She is enchanted to leave you.

But that lyrical content has little to do with the music video, where Swift finds something even more charming than a prince: a chance to tie in with a story centered on on her running stroke-of-midnight theme.

One development that fans had hoped for with Swift’s “Tonight Show” appearance didn’t quite pan out. Swifties had hoped she’d be announcing her 2023 tour, but she allowed only that she would like to do one… which may or may not be code for the entire thing being locked and loaded. In any case, Swifties who will have to wait a little longer for tour details can occupy themselves till 3 a.m. or later by collecting freshly laid eggs.

One clue to future plans that doesn’t even seem particularly subtle: a strong hint in the video that “Speak Now” will be the next “Taylor’s Version” re-recording to come out. In the clip, Swift pushes a purple elevator button for the third floor — and she wore a purple dress on the cover of “Speak Now,” her third album. Less popular as a theory, but not completely unviable, is the remoter possibility that the color/number combo could just mean that “Lavender Haze” will be the third single or video from the new album.

The “Bejeweled” video and Fallon visit capped a day in which the news broke that “Midnights” has already collected more than a million album-equivalent units, the first album to do so in a week since Swift’s own “Reputation” in 2017. Luminate reported that the album stood at about 1.2 million units after just three days, with close to a half-million copies sold on the vinyl format.

7 Awesome Games From Malaysia's Level Up KL Game Expo - IGN

Level Up KL is a game expo held annually in Kuala Lumpur. This year’s first post-pandemic show featured a wealth of great games from across the Southeast Asia region, with developers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, the Philippines and more. The quality of games coming from this region is growing at an amazing rate, with some not-to-be-missed new titles coming this year and next.

Here are a handful of my favourites from the Level Up show floor this year.

7 Awesome Games From Malaysia's Level Up KL Game Expo

Kabaret

With its dark fantasy take on folklore from across Southeast Asia, Kabaret is a visual novel with a rich scattering of minigames and other confections, all presented with an incredibly striking hand-drawn art style and a vibrant soundtrack. While developer Persona Theory (Fires at Midnight) is based in Malaysia, they are collaborating with developers and musicians from across the region to breathe life into Kabaret’s captivating mythos.

The story follows Jebat, a freshly dead ex-human who must adjust to his new horned serpentine form in an afterlife filled with monsters, keeping his nerve as he rubs shoulders with a harimau jadian weretiger, a pontianak vampire and other mythical creatures from Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and more.

The game unfolds through a mix of visual novel text boxes set against grand full-screen painted backgrounds, comic-book panels, dialogue trees with abstract images instead of text, and minigames where you must lead a tea ceremony, flick guli marbles, or conduct a musical theatre performance. There’s even an interactive glossary for Malay vocabulary. Grounded in legend yet unbound by reality, Kabaret is shaping up to be a truly special experience. Pick it up on Xbox, Steam and Epic Games Store in March 2023.

Faerie Afterlight

This fun yet thoughtful puzzle-platform game with Metroidvania elements is bold enough to ask the question: What if you didn’t have to kill every enemy creature you encounter? Yes, you can do that in Faerie Afterlight, from Indonesia’s Clay Game Studio, but you also have the option of leaving them alive and having your companion fairy Wispy possess them so you can utilise their abilities. For example, some enemies are impervious to spikes, so riding on their back will help you to move around spike pits safely, while other flying creatures can help you to reach high platforms or cross large chasms.

Wispy’s skills evolve through the course of the demo, allowing you to unlock various mysterious doors, shortcuts and respawn points, or to control and rearrange platforms to allow you to proceed through the increasingly non-linear stages.

All of this is rendered in a gorgeous art style, a surrealistic and warm visual take on the Ori series accompanied by a dreamy soundtrack. The game is due for release on PC sometime later this year or early 2023, and a demo is available now on Steam.

Katana Rama

With an emphasis on making players feel like a badass, Katana Rama is a slick third-person action game from Malaysian developer Ghost Machine in which you play as a hacker program fighting its way out of a digital security system. Cue ninja action and wall-running parkour, as you lock on to one-hit-kill enemies with your katana to rack up Power Level points that then allow you to break the shields of tougher enemies or to unlock the next kill-room.

Katana Rama uses a dash system that is slick and fast and surprisingly intuitive, with excellent visual feedback that uses bright colour-coding and numbers to ensure you always know how many Power Level points you have and how many more you need to advance through the battle.

With only three bosses, it’s a short game, but one that is replayable: While each enemy-filled room is hand-designed, they are strung together procedurally so that each run is different than the last, and capped off with a creative and challenging boss fight. Katana Rama’s demo is available now on Steam Next Fest, and the game is due in February 2023.

Never Ending Beyond

Petting animals is proven to be good for your mental health – but in Never Ending Beyond it’s a survival technique. In this roguelite from Malaysia’s One More Dream Studios (Ageless), players take control of an android called CareTakerUnit, which has a unique skill for petting animals to unlock new abilities. You must explore handcrafted but procedurally linked islands of a shattered planet called the Beyond to find and rescue animals – increasing your arsenal of offensive and passive skills in the process.

Each animal you find on your travels will follow you around until you find a warp from which to send it back to your base, where you too will return each time you die, allowing you to harness your pets and other resources to craft for the next run. And of course, depending on how you mix and match your weapons and skills, every run will be different.

The Steam page for Never Ending Beyond was launched during Level Up KL, so why not tickle its tummy.

Instantly familiar to fans of Overcooked or Moving Out, At Your Service is a housekeeping action game for up to four players, from Thailand’s FairPlay Studios. Players are tasked with tidying a messy home, starting with simple tasks such as emptying the garbage and sweeping the floor. The action grows more chaotic as the tasks grow in complexity, such as washing the laundry, hanging it out to dry and then putting it away into closets – but what really throws a spanner in the works is the inclusion of homeowners, who will follow you around to make sure you’re working hard and grow ever more furious when you miss a spot.

The game will launch on all platforms next year with three different world themes, each with their own gameplay gimmicks: suburban homes of the 1980s, a futuristic sci-fi setting, and a magical realm of castles and wizards. It will launch with couch co-op, with online added in the future. Fun and frantic, At Your Service is shaping up to be a welcome addition to the family party game space.

Troublemaker

One of the wilder games at Level Up KL was Troublemaker, whose anarchic demo went viral after a let’s play racked up over 5 million views. The young developers at Indonesia’s Gamecom Team have been heavily influenced by the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series, throwing a mishmash of violent combat encounters and bizarre minigames into a schoolyard setting as new transfer student Budi takes on the bullies of the Student Council to climb the high-school social ladder.

The demo for this “action-adventure-beat-’em-up” is filled with local slang and gutter humour, plus plenty of violence – its surprisingly deep combat system allows the player to unlock new abilities and Sick Moves such as delivering heavier combo punches, wielding a sickle or throwing a sandal in your opponent’s face.

The minigames are hit and miss, but they certainly have an odd charm as they draw on everyday life in a run-down school – “race” hilariously slowly in a wheelchair some classmates found lying around, enter a first-person survival-horror game, train a “stupid bird” to fly, and even undertake a rock-hard multiple-choice school test. Troublemaker is set for release in 2023 on Steam and Epic Games Store, and a demo is available on Steam until October 23.

Rendezvous

Set in futuristic versions of Indonesia’s Bay City and Surabaya, Rendezvous from Pendopo Multi Creation is a cyberpunk noir adventure game with a local flavour. Its glorious 2.5D pixel art design and fluid character animation carry more than a whiff of 1990s classic Flashback, but its cityscapes are more easily explored, and filled with the intrigue and paranoia that you’d hope for in a cyberpunk noir game.

In a world where the ruling megacorps make life crappy for everyone, protagonist and reformed criminal agent Setyo is pulled back into the sinister underworld as he hunts for his sister, who he learns is working with an infamous Cyberrunner gang. The adventure has you undertaking Setyo’s mundane night job as a security guard, chatting with NPCs, hacking robots, picking up clues and solving puzzles as the drama escalates into all-out action.

Rendezvous is due out sometime within the next year or so, and a playable prologue titled Rendezvous: Shadows of the Past is available now on Steam.

Honourable Mentions

Here’s a bonus batch of hot games from Level Up KL! The demo for Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly is out now on Steam, and it is promising to be another deeply touching serving of late-night java therapy. Gloom and Doom is a gag-filled 1990s slacker comedy movie dressed as a horror game, with a supernatural twist. Rhythm Doctor’s simple one-button mechanic belies a fiendishly hardcore music game based on complex rhythm theory and tricky timing. Let’s Build a Zoo is a sweet-natured management sim with added DNA splicing, allowing you to create up to 300,000 different animals to wow your visitors. And Cuisineer is a roguelite dungeon-crawler RPG filled to the brim with yummies.

Annex A Quotes from Partners

Scrawl Animation x Cyber Group Studios

Alex Player blurs the lines between the real and game worlds, as our young heroes juggle school life with dreams of becoming e-sports champions. We’re thrilled to partner with Cyber Group Studio’s creative and technical teams in re-imagining the age-old coming-of-age tale while bringing the world of video games to life with animation produced using the Unreal game engine. The support from IMDA enables us to leverage this strategic partnership to create a unique real-time production ecosystem in Singapore,” says Seng Choon Meng, CEO of Scrawl Animation.

“Cyber Group Studios is a forerunner in animation production using the Unreal engine, having launched the 100% real-time animation series Giganto Club which is a digital spin-off from the hit series Gigantosarus. The Alex Player co-production supports Cyber Group Studios and Scrawl Animation’s strategy to develop a global real-time pipeline, exchange storytelling techniques using the Unreal pipeline, and extend creative boundaries in efficient ways,“ says Dominique Bourse, Chief Operating Officer of Cyber Group Studios.

Mocha Chai Laboratories

“Story always comes first and I am clear about why I want to tell a story. Venus on Mars was made because I feel that there is a lack of stories told from the female perspective, especially one where our heroine navigates a world of only men. The show’s themes - Curiousity and Courage - are values I embrace as a showrunner and values that underpin our brand of content. Mocha Chai Laboratories is fortunate to have partners that are looking to us for original content. We are glad to have the support of CJ ENM HK and IMDA, and streaming platforms we are developing new content with for Asia, all of whom appreciate our creative vision and work. BTS' V shares new video from Run BTS dance rehearsals, ARMY decodes secret to their impeccable sync: 'Unwavering fear of J-Hope…' - The Indian Express

It’s been two days, but ARMY hasn’t been able to forget BTS’s concert, least of all their electrifying Run BTS performance. Fans have been waiting with bated breath to see the choreography for the energetic and power-packed track, as it’s a reminder of their earlier days. The septet didn’t disappoint at all and went far beyond expectations in Busan. With impeccable synchronised choreography, fiery raps, the performance to Run BTS was definitely the highlight for the concert.

V (born Kim Taehyung) shared the video of the boys working hard and practising the dance and captioned his post, “Burned up after a long time. Good job.”

ARMY is in awe of the dedication to their craft. While many continue to talk about the dance steps and are drawing comparisons to earlier dances like Mic Drop and Bapsae, others also joked about how J-Hope—the band’s choreographer and rapper—would have ensured that they had practised the steps till perfection. J-Hope, as cheery and jovial as he normally is, is known to be a tough task-master during practise sessions and all the members have joked about being rather terrified of making a blunder in their performances. One fan wrote, “The secret to bts’ synchronization is their dedication, countless hours of dance practice, and of course, their unwavering fear of jung hoseok.”

The Busan concert is the last scheduled concert for BTS at present.

Tom Hardy’s Netflix Movie ‘Havoc’: What We Know So Far - What's on Netflix

Netflix is doubling down on overall deals with talented and award-winning filmmakers, making the most recent one with Gareth Evans (Apostle, Gangs of London). The first project to come out of this deal will be Havoc, a crime drama starring Tom Hardy (The Revenant, Venom). Evans will write and direct the film which is finished filming in 2021 and is expected to be released on Netflix in early 2023.

Gareth Evans is most well known for his Indonesian martial arts films like The Raid, The Raid 2, and Merantau, through which he brought the Indonesian martial art of Pencak silat into world cinema. Evans is also known for creating and directing Sky Atlantic’s critically-acclaimed series Gangs of London which stars Joe Cole (Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders) and Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones).

Netflix’s overall deal with Evans has been in development for a while, according to Deadline, and both sides wanted to make sure Tom Hardy was locked before announcing anything. Netflix liked Evans’ style very much and began working out a deal after their collaboration on the 2018 horror-thriller Apostle, which starred Dan Stevens, Michael Sheen, and Lucy Boynton.

The producers behind Netflix’s Havoc are Gareth Evans for One More One Productions (Apostle), Ed Talfan for Severn Screen (Apostle, The Pembrokeshire Murders), and Aram Tertzakian for XYZ Films (Mandy, The Silencing). Leading star Tom Hardy is also set to produce.

What is the plot of Havoc?

The official logline for Netflix’s Havoc has been revealed via Deadline:

The story is set after a drug deal gone wrong, when a bruised detective must fight his way through a criminal underworld to rescue a politician’s estranged son, while unraveling a deep web of corruption and conspiracy that ensnares his entire city.

While the premise of the film doesn’t break any new grounds, it has no source material and that might feel refreshing to the kind of Netflix viewer who may have felt overwhelmed by the recent push towards franchises, adaptations, sequels, prequels, and reboots.

Who is cast in Havoc?

tom hardy

In February 2021, Tom Hardy was announced to star in Netflix’s Havoc. Hardy will star as the leading character, Walker, the aforementioned ‘bruised detective’. Hardy is known for his roles in many films and TV series including The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road, Venom, Capone, Inception, Peaky Blinders, and more.

On March 22, 2021, Forest Whitaker was announced to co-star in Havoc along with Hardy. The details of Whitaker’s character still remain under wraps. Whitaker previously starred in the Netflix Original holiday musical Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey.

On June 28th, Timothy Olyphant was also confirmed to be starring in Havoc. Further cast members were also announced, adding the talents of Jessie Mei Li, Justin Cornwell, and Yann Yann Yeo.

The remaining supporting cast members have been confirmed to be Quelin Sepulveda, Luis GuzmΓ‘n, Sunny Pang, and Michelle Waterson.

What’s the production status on Havoc?

Filming for Havoc began on July 8th, 2021 in Cardiff, Wales. Production lasted for a few months before officially coming to an end on October 22nd, 2021.

Various locations across South Wales were used such as Barry Island Pleasure Park, and Brangwyn Hall in Swansea.

Since October, the feature has been in post-production.

When we might see Havoc on Netflix?

As filming came to an end in October 2021, many would be forgiven for thinking that Havoc would be released on Netflix in 2022, however, this is not the case.

Havoc is expected to be released on Netflix within the first few months of 2023.

For now, we await official confirmation from Netflix.

Are you looking forward to Havoc on Netflix? Let us know in the comments and keep this bookmarked for all future updates.

Indonesia’s KawanKawan Teams With Singapore’s Momo to Co-Produce ‘Dreaming & Dying,’ ‘Don’t Cry Butterfly’ (EXCLUSIVE) - Variety

Indonesia’s KawanKawan Media has partnered with Singapore’s Momo Film Co on Nelson Yeo’s “Dreaming & Dying” and Duong Dieu Linh’s “Don’t Cry Butterfly,” it was revealed at this week’s Asian Contents & Film Market, held on the sidelines of the Busan International Film Festival.

“Dreaming & Dying,” about three middle aged individuals who are forced to confront their inner demons as a long-buried love triangle between them resurfaces, is currently in production.

Yeo said: “ ‘Dreaming & Dying’ is the accumulation of my obsession with dreams and memories. Primarily, it is about how we choose to remember things in our own ways, and as time passes, that fantasy becomes the reality.”

The Hanoi-set “Don’t Cry, Butterfly” follows housewife Tam who finds out that her husband is cheating on her. Instead of confronting him, she voodoos her husband back into love. KawanKawan joins Momo and An Nam Productions, which recently secured coin from U.K. investment fund Adeline Arts and Science.

The project is finalizing a European co-producer. Principal photography is scheduled in Vietnam for the second half of 2023.

KawanKawan’s Yulia Evina Bhara said: “Very excited to collaborate on ‘Dreaming & Dying’ by Nelson Yeo and ‘Don’t Cry Butterfly’ by Duong Dieu Linh. Both directors have a very strong vision and unique approach and I can see it from short films that they’ve done. I am looking forward to produce these with Tan Si En, from Momo Film Co.”

Tan Si En, MD and producer at Momo Film Co, said: ““I’ve long admired Yulia. She is always championing people, talents, and stories from Southeast Asia. I’m thrilled to finally work with her on these two precious projects.”

Duong Dieu Linh added: “I’m thankful to have KawanKawan who identify with the same vision to come on board and support my first feature.”

KawanKawan’s Venice winner “Autobiography” and Locarno winner “Stone Turtle” are Busan selections this year and the company also has “Gaspar” at the Busan Asian Project Market. The company has an extensive slate.

Busan’s Asian Film Content Market Wraps Up Amid Optimism and Post-Pandemic Concerns - Hollywood Reporter

The Asian Content Film Market (ACFM), the Busan International Film Festival’s industry platform, wrapped up this week with organizers and market participants voicing a mix of optimism and concern for the post-pandemic state of the movie market.

The event, which was held in the city’s massive BEXCO convention center, attracted 1,059 companies and 2,185 industry participants from 48 countries over four days — the highest attendance rate since the market launched in 2006.

The European Pavilion, which was jointly established by the European Film Promotion (EFP) and Unifrance, was staffed by representatives from 39 companies, while major Korean distributors and streaming services, including Disney+ and Netflix, participated in the Busan Story Market, the venue for intellectual property (IP) pitches, which introduced new projects from the region.

Related Stories

A market insider who spoke on condition of anonymity told The Hollywood Reporter that ACFM could potentially become the primary platform for trading in Asian content for the foreseeable future, with Filmart, the biggest film trade market in Asia, losing its attractiveness due to Hong Kong’s political unrest and strict COVID restrictions.

“With Tokyo’s TIFFCOM continuing to be an online event this year and Hong Kong’s political tension, I think many view ACFM as the best option to trade Asian content,” the official said.

The market’s highlight was the pitching sessions of the newly launched Busan Story Market, where original IP spanning Korean and Asian novels, web comics and web novels were introduced to domestic and international industry professionals.

On Sunday, participants from Netflix Korea, acclaimed Korean screenwriter Chung Seo-kyung and U.S. production companies, including Double Hope Films and United Talent Agency, discussed the global success of Korean dramas and films, while also exploring strategies for future development.

Despite the high attendance rate and enthusiasm about Korean content, some companies told THR that actual sales were slow this year, with few major acquisitions announced.

“Overall we didn’t think it was an aggressive market,” said Joy Kim, manager of international sales at Showbox, which brought Korean titles, including Don Lee’s Men of Plastic and Ransomed, an action thriller featuring Ha Jung-woo as the male lead, to the market. “With the global economy in bad shape and some countries still having strict COVID restrictions, box office is yet to have recovered fully.” Added Kim: “Buyers also find it difficult to cope with the increased price of Korean content. But many still think it is worth the price.”

Many companies were understood to still be negotiating deals as the market came to a conclusion. Busan Story Market generated 1,027 business meetings during the market, according to organizers.

Veteran sales outfit Finecut acquired international rights to Brave Citizen (working title), an adaptation of a web comic that was produced by Wavve, a local streaming service. The story, which follows a female boxing champion becoming a substitute teacher, is currently in postproduction.

CJ ENM and Japan’s Toei Animation disclosed the status of IP cooperation projects and discussed future business strategies to produce global content in an event titled “Cooperation Between Korea and Japan’s IP Business: It’s Harvest Time.” Toei, which was founded in 1956 with the goal of becoming Asia’s Disney, has produced scores of hit animations, including Galaxy Express 999, Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk

“If Korean companies managed to develop trendy and relatable IPs, and produced content recognized by the global market based on flexible manpower operation and a quick decision-making process, Japanese content is characterized by its culture of masters who can produce optimized results without losing solidity,” said Lee Jong-min, head of the CJ ENM IP Development Center. “During our collaboration, we learned that Japanese film companies have been working hard to enter the global market. I hope that we can find an answer to accelerate the process as our systems and planning capabilities are combined.”

The Asian Project Market (APM), Busan’s main co-production market, also unveiled its award winners Tuesday. The Busan Award, which comes with a $15,000 cash prize, went to director Maung Sun’s Future Laobans of Myanmar, while the CJ ENM Award went to Gaspar by Indonesia’s Yosep Anggi Noen. The TAICCA Award, handed out by Taiwan Creative Contents Agency, went to Sima’s Song by Roya Sadat. This year’s APM selected 29 award-winning projects covering a diverse range of topics, genres and production countries.

Daniel Kim, head of ACFM, explained that market badge registrants this year rose by 20 percent compared to 2019, suggesting a healthy comeback compared to pre-pandemic levels.

“Overall, participants were satisfied, and we believe that the needs to meet in person and discuss deals were met,” Kim says. “But for the buyers side it was tricky because Korean film companies are still tending to delay their theatrical releases and that makes overseas releases unpredictable. Also, the absence of Chinese companies may have had an impact on slow sales. So we’re still in the transition period. But next year we hope to expand the market infrastructure to be able to host over 3,000 participants.”

Mob Psycho 100 III: Reigen Arataka continues to rule social media after episode 2 airs - Sportskeeda

With Mob Psycho 100 III episode 2 released, fans of the series continued to discuss Reigen Arataka and his antics. The character has been one of a kind, as his presence on screen left fans laughing on the floor. In episode 2, fans also saw several such moments as Reigen tried to fool Yokai Hunter Amakusa Haruaki into thinking that he cared about the lore of Yokai and the Yokai King.

The episode also featured a long-awaited moment for many Ritsu Kageyama fans, as they finally saw him in a maid uniform. Salt Middle School was having a cultural festival, and Ritsu's class decided to do a Cross-Dress Maid Cafe, which forced Ritsu to wear a maid uniform and serve his customers.

Mob Psycho 100 III's Reigen Arataka continues to entertain fans with his expressions

Mob Psycho 100 III episode 2 featured several funny Reigen moments as fans found his expressions funny. The way he had an outburst because of Amakusa's persistence to keep talking in a difficult manner turned the fans into a laughing mess as they couldn't stop themselves from sharing the screenshots on Twitter.

Similarly, fans found it funny how Reigen reacted to Mob solving one of his personal dilemmas. Previously, Mob spoke to Reigen for advice, but in this episode, the former managed to find a solution himself. Fans found it hilarious that Reigen was shocked to hear the same rather than being proud of Mob.

The way Reigen reacted was unpredictable in a given situation. When Amakusa tried to hire Mob and Serizawa as Yokai Hunters, he looked terrified at their possibility of leaving him behind.

But when he learned that both of his employees refused to become Yokai Hunters, he started giving a speech on how one couldn't buy everything with money. The moment Amakusa started speaking, Reigen let out a "huh" since he was startled, providing enough sources for fans to make memes on.

Several moments in the episode also led fans out there to create fanarts on the same. One fan went on to create a fanart of Reigen and Serizawa on their ramen lunch/date, while another fan created a fanart of Reigen in a maid costume.

Prior to the release of Mob Psycho 100 III episode 2, fans were hyped up by the series' return, which they celebrated with several fanarts and compilations, most of which were aimed at Reigen Arataka.

The posts were also to celebrate his birthday, which was on October 10.

Mob Psycho 100 fans are thankful to Bones for animating Ritsu in a maid costume

Manga readers knew that Ritsu was going to wear a maid costume during the cultural festival. However, they didn't expect to see it animated in Mob Psycho 100, which is why fans were shocked to see that their dreams had come true after years of waiting.

The scene itself was funny as some women were cooing at Ritsu for how cute he looked in a maid outfit. But as Ristu was hitting his limits, Sho Suzuki arrived at the maid cafe, and both of their reactions were priceless.

The maid cafe scene also gave birth to a new meme based on Kakashi's iconic thumbs-up in Naruto. Moreover, Mob Psycho 100 fans can possibly expect to see this meme again in the near future.
