Japanese cinema `must change` to help young directors, says acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda - WION
Acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda fears that Japan's underfunded, inward-looking cinema industry is putting off young talent, so he's taken matters into his own hands by mentoring up-and-coming filmmakers for a new Netflix series.
Kore-eda, whose 2018 film 'Shoplifters' won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, told AFP that complacent attitudes and poor working conditions are holding Japan back in cinema and TV while its neighbour South Korea powers ahead internationally.
"Our filmmaking environment must change," he said in an interview, calling for an end to the low pay, long hours and insecurity faced by those trying to hone their skills.
"Throughout my career, I've been able to focus solely on improving my own filmmaking. But now, when I look around me, I see that young people are no longer choosing to work in film and television."
To help tackle the issue, the director of "Broker" and "Our Little Sister" collaborated with three younger proteges to make a new Netflix series set in tradition-steeped Kyoto.
The nine-episode manga adaptation, "The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House", tells the tale of a tight-knit community of kimono-clad apprentice entertainers known as maiko.
Kore-eda, 60, said he also learned many things from his mentees while working as a showrunner for the series, to be released worldwide on January 12.
"It's more like -- I want to steal something from these three," he joked, complimenting the quality of their art and "knowledge of equipment that's far deeper than mine".
- 'Looking inward' -
While Japanese anime is booming on Netflix and other streaming services, the nation's live-action offerings have been overshadowed by South Korean megahits such as "Squid Game" and the Oscar-winning movie "Parasite".
To become a global cultural powerhouse, the South Korean government has spearheaded efforts to launch a blitz of pop-culture exports in the past two decades, Kore-eda said.
"All the while Japan has been looking inwards," with little incentive to market its films and TV shows overseas thanks to the flourishing domestic market. "That's one big reason why we see a gap," he added.
After the success of "Shoplifters", about a family of small-time crooks who take in a child they find on the street, the director branched out into languages other than Japanese.
He has previously said that making French film "The Truth", released in 2019, and the recent South Korean title "Broker" sharpened his perspective on what the industry lacks at home.
This year, Kore-eda and other directors argued that Japan needs an equivalent of France's state-run National Centre for Cinema to more robustly fund the industry and improve working conditions.
A 2019 Japanese government survey found over 60 percent of employees and 70 percent of freelancers involved in filmmaking in Japan were unhappy with their low pay, gruelling hours and the uncertain future of the industry.
- #MeToo campaigning -
Hiroshi Okuyama, one of the three directors who worked with Kore-eda on the new series, said he and his peers no longer see their vocation as a viable source of income on its own.
"Filmmakers of my generation, myself included, are resigned to the reality that we can no longer make a living solely by making movies," the 26-year-old told AFP, sitting alongside the two others, Megumi Tsuno and Takuma Sato.
Kore-eda is also an active campaigner against sexual harassment in the film world, and in March he and others stood in solidarity with actors who came forward with stories of being assaulted by a male director in Japan.
Those accusations morphed into a social media campaign resembling #MeToo, and in July, the Directors Guild of Japan issued a statement vowing to eradicate harassment -- described by Kore-eda as a "big step forward".
But he is calling for a system to protect victims who speak out, because harassment still tends to be "treated as a matter of a person's poor character, with little awareness yet that this is a more structural problem".
When he's not campaigning, Kore-eda is busy thinking about his next projects, saying he wants to focus on immigration, abandonment and even work that resembles an "epic poem".
All in all, "there are too many things I want to do."

Hypocritical reporting on Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo's dating news by K-media angers netizens - Sportskeeda
With Song Joong-ki’s confirmation of being in a relationship, Korean netizens noticed a hypocritical pattern with how the country outlets published the actor’s news in comparison with Song Hye-kyo’s dating rumors in the past.
An anonymous user posted screenshots of the two contrasting news on Nate, a popular South Korean online forum with the title “It’s ridiculous to insult Song Hye-kyo” on December 26. The post has already garnered 162k views and over 950 comments at the time of writing this article.
One screenshot was of a news outlet covering the Vincenzo star’s relationship news positively, calling his girlfriend “beautiful” in the headline. It read:
“Song Joong-ki, dating a beautiful British woman… “Continuing our good relationship”
Another screenshot, reporting on the Encounter actress’ dating rumor, showed the stark contrast as it read:
“Was Song Joong-ki not enough?” Song Hye-kyo reaching her 40s, embroiled in another relationship rumor"
One Twitter user quote-retweeted the article and reversed the names. It read:
“Was Song Hye-kyo not enough?" Song Joong-ki, embroiled in another relationship rumor”
Netizens talk about the difference in Korean outlets reporting Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo’s dating news
Actors Song Joong-ki (Vincenzo, Reborn Rich) and Song Hye-kyo (Encounter, Full House) were once known as Korea’s A-list “SongSong” couple, who got divorced in July 2019. They tied the knot in October 2017, a year after their drama Descendants of the Sun aired.
The couple’s divorce was explosive news in the entertainment industry and as a result, the duo have often popped up in dating rumors with others throughout the year.
A recent Nate post aimed to show people how the Korean media outlets were reporting the actor’s newly confirmed relationship and the actress’ recent dating rumors.
The poster also drew comparisons and shared that the Reborn Rich actor dating a foreigner is receiving a positive response, but if the tables were turned, women would receive hate and s*xual comments.
The post resonated with 970 people, who reacted with a thumbs up on the article. Korean netizens made several comments under the post on how the reporting standards were different for male and female celebrities.
They mentioned that no matter if the female is an idol or an actress, they usually suffer a bigger blow than their male counterparts.
@pannchoa haha just try to figure it out what if hye kyo is the first one who announce tht she in relationship🤭🤭 the blame always one the girl side🖕🏻🖕🏻
Song Joong-ki goes public with his non-celebrity girlfriend
On December 26, reports of the Reborn Rich actor dating a non-celebrity British woman took over the entertainment industry.
His agency soon confirmed the news, stating that he “is currently seeing a woman with positive feelings.” Initial reports revealed that the actor’s partner had accompanied him on various public schedules.

Meanwhile, Song Hye-kyo is all set to return to the small screen with revenge-thriller The Glory. Song Joong-ki, on the other hand, recently wrapped up Reborn Rich, a chaebol drama that has become the best viewed miniseries of 2022.

Fans angry as TXT's Huening Kai is nowhere to be seen in SBS' 2022 Gayo Daejeon official photos - Sportskeeda
TXT's Huening Kai was cut off from the official performance photos of the 2022 Gayo Daejeon, leading fans to criticize SBS for their lack of attention to detail.
Accidentally or on purpose, removing a member from a K-pop group is one of the biggest blunders in the eyes of fans. TOMORROW X TOGETHER, aka TXT, has been active since 2019 and has performed on countless stages. Their performance at this year’s Gayo Daejeon stole many hearts, and while SBS earned praise, it soon got swept in the fandom’s rage.

SBS released four official photos of the Good Boy Gone Bad singers’ performance on December 25. MOAs (TXT’s fandom) instantly noticed that TXT’s maknae was missing from them. Fans angrily began tweeting “TXT is 5” leading it to trend on Twitter for some time.
SBS lands in trouble after on-site photos cut off TXT’s Huening Kai from the group
over 12k likes ur all going to hell for supporting this when huening kai has clearly intentionally been left out of the pics . twitter.com/sbsnoriter/sta…
TXT’s Huening Kai, as the group’s youngest member, is pampered by both his groupmates and the fandom. The singer is known for his high-pitch squeals of excitement and bubbly personality. However, seeing him cut off from high-quality group images taken mid-performance opened a floodgate of angry comments from fans.
The four photos that SBS released on December 25 included group shots. In the first photo, Soobin was the only one seen clearly, since it was the end of their DNA cover which required all members to stand in a line. The other three photos captured Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, and Taehyun, but had no hint of Huening Kai.
Fans soon began commenting how “mad” they were at SBS for not including TXT’s Huening Kai in the group photo, demanding that the network delete the post, revise it with the youngest member’s pictures, and then re-post it. Take a look at fans’ angry reactions below:

SBS also comes under the radar of ENHYPEN’s fandom for excluding Jay
TXT’s Huening Kai wasn’t the only member who didn’t make it to the official group photos, but ENHYPEN’s Jay suffered the same fate. ENGENEs, ENHYPEN’s fandom, called out SBS for excluding Jay’s photo from the 2022 Gayo Daejeon performance photos.
A few fans noted that Jay’s exclusion was not a one-time thing, but had occurred multiple times previously. Similar to MOAs, they bombarded criticism under #ENHYPEN_IS_7 hashtag. Take a look at some of the fans’ reactions for it below:
We don't understand why Jay is always excluded in SBS releases - photos, articles, videos - apart from the broadcast itself, NOTHING. We waited PATIENTLY for so long for releases and still, nothing. ENHYPEN IS SEVEN. NO ONE SHOULD BE LEFT BEHIND. NO ONE.

The World's Oldest Animations Stretch All The Way Back to Cave Times - ScienceAlert
From France to Indonesia and Australia, ancient life is painted across the walls of darkened caves, seemingly motionless silhouettes in earthen colors that echo an earlier time.
But in recent years, archaeologists have imagined how these simple images may have captured moving scenes in ways we had perhaps overlooked. Animation, it seems, has its roots in ancient artworks.
Earlier this year, a series of stone engravings of strange animals with melded bodies reignited speculation about the earliest forms of animation. Using 3D models and virtual reality software to bring ancient etchings to life, the team of archeologists argued that the stone artworks might have been dynamic representations of animals in motion if viewed in firelight.
Although they might be a long way from the hyper-real animation that entertains us today, these prehistoric artworks inspire awe – in that our human desire to understand, represent and recreate movement runs deep.
Another example lay for centuries covered in ash and dust in Shahr-e Sukhteh, an archaeological site in southeast Iran known as the 'Burnt City'. Here, researchers found an unassuming goblet bearing burnt red sketches of a jumping goat that springs to life when the vase is spun – much like a modern zoetrope of the 19th century.
In five sequential images, the horned goat jumps up to eat the leaves of a tree that might represent the Assyrian tree of life. But archeologists only recognized the drawings as a series of images years after the vase was unearthed in 1967.
Dating suggests the clay vase, currently on display at the National Museum of Iran, is around 5,200 years old, with some claiming it could be one of the oldest examples of animation. Although that might be contentious, at the very least Persian potters were mastering early concepts of animation and persistence of vision long before 19th-century inventors put two and two together.
"This is suggestive that humans had for thousands of years been fascinated by animal movement and had put energy into trying to capture a series of sequential images," says Leila Honari, a Persian animator and art scholar at the University of Griffith in Australia, writing in the journal of Animation Studies in 2018.
As a paleolithic researcher and filmmaker Marc Azéma describes in a 2015 paper, there are – if we pause to look closely – many more examples of Palaeolithic artists breathing life into their artworks.
Sprawling, graphic, and often chaotic narrative scenes captured movement with repeated sequences. For instance, the Grand Panneau of the Salle du Fond, an over 10-meter-long (33 feet) hunting scene found inside the Chauvet Cave in France, is filled with horses and bison and features cave lions that reappear to chase their prey along the wall. It has been dated to around 32,000 years old.
In Indonesia, some 12,000 years earlier, people on the island of Sulawesi painted panoramic scenes stretching across limestone walls depicting supernatural beings wrangling buffalo – in what is thought to be the oldest story ever found.
While these narrative displays are majestic, Honari writes that "the Burnt City's goblet indicates the knowledge of its creator in conceiving a series of images as a movement sequence."
"The ancient potter created 'key frames' that contain a very basic level of now-classic animation principals such as squash and stretch, anticipation and even timing and spacing" to create a vase that "must be the result of years and years of trial-and-error experiments," Honari adds.
Split-motion sketches were also long ago used to capture moving body parts. These artworks, like the stone etchings, described earlier this year, superimpose animal forms that appear, at first, to have one too many heads or more legs than usual.
But, as Azéma explains, these prehistoric drawings depict animals galloping along, tossing their head, or swatting their tails from side to side – akin to sequences seen in flipbooks. Sometimes barely sketched contour lines around the head or legs also convey a sense of motion.
"An eight-legged bison drawn in the Alcôve des Lions in Chauvet Cave proves that split-action movement by superimposition was already used from the Aurignacian [period]" of some 35,000 years ago, Azéma writes. "This graphic illusion achieves its full impact when the light from a grease lamp or a torch is moved along the length of the rock wall."
Ancient bone discs and two-sided plaques bearing split-motion images of animals have also been found and were likely used to create entertaining or symbolic visual illusions.
But no matter the form or age of these artworks, they still tell a story, one that we can only piece together at a distance. Animations or not, we can still marvel at ancient cave paintings that transport onlookers to other worlds long before our time and reorient our understanding of what it means to be human.

Seventeen’s Vernon Shifts Towards Pop Punk Chaos on Debut Solo ‘Black Eye’ - Rolling Stone
Solo Debut
Vernon becomes the third member of the 13-piece group to release solo material, having previously teamed up with Charli XCX and Omega Sapien
Pop punk colors Black Eye, the debut solo from Vernon, one-thirteenth of the K-pop supergroup Seventeen. The third to venture out on his own, following Hoshi and Woozi, the hip-hop unit member previously appeared on a string of features, popping up alongside Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama on a “Beg For You” remix and Omega Sapien on “Wrecker.”
Vernon chose chaos from the initial announcement of the project, sharing a teaser trailer previewing the guitar-heavy title track with the lyrics: “I’m on my worst behavior/How you like me now?/Put a muzzle on me/I’ll spit in your mouth.”
The fiery concept photos accompanying the release of Black Eye set the basis for an adoption of pop punk’s roughed up aesthetic. The “Black Eye” music video is all cathartic emotional release riding on the high of destruction captured in camcorder-quality footage. The singer is seen singing against moody backdrops, from abandoned buildings to forlorn sunsets.
Vernon has been working towards enveloping himself in the genre’s sound since first suggesting Seventeen toy with it in the style of Avril Lavigne on their 2021 bonus track “2 Minus 1,” he and his bandmate Joshua told Forbes at the time.
Trending
“I’ve been into that genre recently and when our label offered a chance to work on an all-English track to me and Joshua, I thought ‘Why not a pop-punk track?’,” Vernon said. “Bring back the early-2000s vibes, but we also took inspiration from that and new-school sounds.”
Fans pressed him on his influences from there, finding that he was as much of a student of Green Day as he was of Lavigne, with Black Eye reflecting the streamlined rock sound of artists like Yungblud and Machine Gun Kelly with a sharp pop edge.

Indonesian Films Race Past Pre-Pandemic Admissions Record; ‘KKN Di Desa Penari’, ‘Satan’s Slaves 2’, Disney Movies Top 2022 Box Office; Theatrical Market Set For Growth - Deadline
Indonesian movies had racked up more than 53 million admissions in their home market as of December 18, according to local box office analyst Bicara Box Office, overtaking the previous record of 51.9 million admissions set in the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
Bicara is predicting it will be 54.97 million admissions by the end of 2022.
Awi Suryadi’s KKN Di Desa Penari, produced by MD Pictures, was topping Indonesia’s year-end chart, as of mid-December, after raking in 9.23 million admissions during its release over the Eid holidays in April/May.
The folk horror tale, about a group of students who unwittingly provoke angry spirits during a trip to the countryside, has also smashed the record for biggest local film of all time in Indonesia, beating Warkop DKI Reborn: Jangkrik Boss Part 1, which pulled in 6.86 million admissions in 2016. It’s also the second biggest film overall in Indonesian box office history, behind only Disney’s Avengers: Endgame, with 11.3 million admissions in 2019.
While Indonesian cinema chains don’t share box office figures in hard currency, Bicara Box Office founder Sigit Prabowo estimates KKN Di Desa Penari grossed around $26m.
Disney’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness was the second biggest film of the year in Indonesia, as of mid-December, with 6.49 million admissions, according to Bicara Box Office figures. Avatar: The Way Of Water, released by Disney on December 14, had already entered Indonesia’s year-end top 20 at the time of writing, but with its three hours plus run-time is unlikely to overtake Doctor Strange, at least in the 2022 calendar year.
Joko Anwar’s Satan’s Slaves 2: Communion, released in early August, was ranking third overall in mid-December with 6.39 million admissions. The horror sequel, which Shudder recently acquired for the U.S. and several other territories, is currently Indonesia’s third biggest local film of all time.
At the time of writing, Disney had two other films in Indonesia’s year-end top ten – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ranking fifth overall with 4.51 million admissions and Thor: Love And Thunder ranking sixth with 4.02 million admissions. Universal was the only other US studio to have films in the top ten, with Jurassic World Dominion ranking seventh with 3.25 million and Minions: The Rise Of Gru coming in tenth with 2.55 million, according to Bicara Box Office figures.
“The post-pandemic opening of theatres in Indonesia has been encouraging, with the success of local films and consumers back in the cinemas to watch our Marvel Studios films on the big screen,” says Disney Indonesia Vice President & General Manager Vineet Puri. “20th Century Studios’ Avatar: The Way Of Water has also shown a strong performance in its opening week in Indonesia, opening at number one with a 99% market share.”
But while Disney and local films are performing strongly, the market overall has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels, pulling in just over 90 million admissions as of mid-December, compared to a record 152 million admissions achieved in 2019.
Looking back over the pandemic years, Bicara Box Office’s Prabowo estimates that overall admissions plunged by 75-80% when Covid-19 shuttered Indonesian cinemas for several months in 2020. US studio titles, including Fast & Furious 9, No Time To Die and Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, made some headway in late 2020 and throughout 2021, despite the Delta variant closing cinemas for a second time from July to September.
However, local producers either delayed new titles or sold them to streaming platforms during this period, so admissions for local movies collapsed to just 12.7 million in 2020 and 4.5 million in 2021.
Rural tales and local folklore
All of which makes the turnaround of local films in 2022 so dramatic. In 2019, Indonesian films had a 35% share of their local box office, while this year their market share is close to 60%. Other hits have included a local remake of Korean film, Miracle In Cell No. 7; Bene Dion Rajagukguk’s family drama Missing Home and Kimo Stamboel’s horror thriller Ivanna.
Missing Home, about a couple who trick their kids into visiting them by pretending to be getting divorced, performed way past expectations for a small family drama, pulling in 2.89 million admissions. Although the film has a comedic premise, it also touches on family dynamics and gender roles in Indonesian society.
Prabowo puts the success of local films down to “pent-up demand, a strong and diverse line-up and increased trust of the Indonesian public towards their local movies.” Referring specifically to the success of KKN Di Desa Penari, he says: “It was a huge cultural phenomenon and really spoke to the audience, especially outside of the big cities. Most Indonesian movies have urban themes, but this film has a rural, traditional message and is deeply rooted in local mythology.”
MD Pictures is re-releasing KKN Di Desa Penari in an extended version on December 29, while Cek Toko Sebelah 2, a sequel to Ernest Prakasa’s 2016 blockbuster, opened on December 22 and is also expected to push year-end admissions for local films even higher.
Investment in cinema infrastructure
Although Indonesia’s box office is not yet back to 2019 levels, local studio execs and independent producers say there are reasons to be optimistic in 2023. Before Covid hit, the market was growing at an encouraging clip due to an influx of investment from both local and international exhibitors.
Indonesia’s cinema industry was closed to foreign investment until 2016, when the government brought in a series of regulatory reforms and international exhibitors began to enter the market. Korea’s CJ CGV now operates around 17% of Indonesia’s cinemas, while Mexico’s Cinepolis, which partnered with Lippo Group’s Cinemaxx, has a 15% share. Market incumbent Cinema 21, which operates around 64% of Indonesia’s cinemas, has also been investing heavily in expanding its circuit. As in China, during its pre-pandemic growth spurt, multiplexes are opening in smaller cities for the first time.
Indonesia has also become a key battleground in the streaming wars, with Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime, regional streamers Viu, iQiyi and Tencent, and local player Vidio all producing Indonesian-language originals for their streaming platforms. But so far the growth of streaming doesn’t seem to be keeping audiences away from cinemas, at least for local movies.
Base Entertainment co-founder Shanty Harmayn, who is producing a slate of local films as well as series for Netflix and Amazon Prime, says a few factors are contributing to this phenomenon, related to both the quality of the films and cinema infrastructure: “Indonesian producers are maintaining high production values and local audiences respond to films that target them specifically, so targeting is key,” Harmayn says.
She adds that the cost and value proposition of visiting the cinema is also keeping the theatrical sector healthy: “Cinema-going is still one of the most affordable leisure activities in Indonesia, with tickets costing the equivalent of just a few dollars, and our cinemas are world class.”
Puri observes that Indonesia has growth potential across both theatrical and streaming: “Indonesia is a strategically important and high growth market for The Walt Disney Company across all our business lines due to its fast-growing middle class segment and growing appetite for the world’s best storytelling and content.”
Looking forward, while next week’s re-release of KKN Di Desa Penari might push that particular title past 10 million admissions, most of the local studios are planning to ride on the current momentum with a strong line-up of releases for early 2023, many of which are based on recognizable IPs.
The local line-up includes MD Pictures’ Hidayah, based on a popular ‘90s TV series; IDN Pictures’ Balada Si Roy, adapted from a popular series of ‘80s novels; Falcon Pictures’ Bayi Ajaib, a remake of an ‘80s horror classic; MVP Pictures’ Mangkujiwo 2, a continuation of the ‘Kuntilanak’ horror franchise; Visinema Pictures’ Jalan Yang Jauh Jangan Lupa Pulang, a sequel to a 2020 blockbuster; Starvision’s Gita Cinta Dari SMA, a remake of a classic ‘80s romance; and Rapi Films’ Waktu Maghrib, tapping into the current trend for religion-themed horror films.
In addition to Marvel movies Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, Disney’s upcoming Indonesian release slate includes the live-action version of The Little Mermaid and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny.

7 K-pop Songs to Get You into the Festive Mood - Rolling Stone India
Carols, decoration dilemmas and the mouth-watering aroma of freshly baked cakes and cookies – Christmas is finally around the corner and so are the consequent holiday playlists!
Whether you intend on enjoying this period with the latest season of the hit Japanese survival show Alice in Borderland or keep the tradition alive with a piping hot cup of cocoa and your favorite Christmas movie, here are seven K-pop Christmas tracks to elevate your holiday experience.
“Beautiful Christmas” – Red Velvet x aespa
Part of SM Entertainment’s 2022 Winter SMTown: SMCU Palace album, “Beautiful Christmas” is a special collaborative holiday track featuring two girl groups that house K-pop’s finest vocalists – Red Velvet and aespa. Cozy and festive with just the right amounts of glitter, the carol dance track conveys a heartwarming message of togetherness and excitement for the festive season: “Only one page left in the calendar/ Can’t explain how excited I am/ For this season/ Winter, my favorite time of the year/ I love winter.”
From Red Velvet’s Yeri embracing aespa’s Winter as she gleefully sings “I love Winter,” NingNing channeling her inner Mariah Carey with an unforgettable whistle register, to the groups wishing ladies a happy Christmas “more than anyone,” the music video is as special and memorable as the collaboration itself.
“Candy” – NCT Dream
A remake of H.O.T.’s hit 1996 song of the same name, NCT Dream’s reinterpretation of “Candy” is the perfect holiday track to lift your mood. The refreshing and upbeat soundscape offers you catchy melodies with dynamic vocal and rap performances – classic NCT Dream attributes.
The song begins with the septet fixed on walking away from a relationship and sees an eventual slump in their convictions as the track progresses. By the time the upbeat chorus comes around, the septet cannot help but gush about their love confession: “I said, ‘I just love you’/ Forgetting what I’d prepared/ Before this moment/ I’ll always be by your side.”
Switching between an arcade set to one brimming with holiday props, “Candy” displays NCT Dream’s affinity towards emanating good vibes and high energy, with rapper Mark stealing the show with his dynamic rap performance.
“Celebrate” – Super Junior
Kyuhyun, Leeteuk, Siwon, Yesung, Ryeowook, Donghae, Eunhyuk, Shindong and Heechul ring in the holiday season with their latest single “Celebrate.” Leading their 11th album The Road: Celebration, “Celebrate” is a letter of gratitude for those who’ve stood by Super Junior’s side throughout their career: “I can still see it clearly/ Meeting on that thrilling day/ The exciting energy that moved us/ So much has changed/ Only we’re the same, oh baby.” Anchored by a warm baseline and dreamy synth, the pop track is accentuated by dulcet vocal performances; perfect for the holiday season.
If wholesome Christmas melodies aren’t your cup of tea, The Road: Celebration has a song for distinct moods including the anti-carol for single individuals called “Hate Christmas.”
“Christmas Evel” – Stray Kids
Embrace the evil this holiday season with one of K-pop’s most enthralling groups, Stray Kids,
who sing and rap about the pitfalls of winter, especially the holiday season. “Christmas Evel” takes an evil and cheeky spin on classic holiday themes and jazzes it up with funky hip-hop sounds. Written by the group’s in-house production team 3Racha (Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han), the song is pretty unfiltered when detailing the frustrations one may have with the over-romanticized aspects of Christmas: “I hate to see those people who stick to each other because it’s cold / I don’t get a single call, only junk messages, I hate everyone.” If you’ve been the epitome of goodness and virtue this year, you can rely on “Christmas Evel’s” lyrical candidness to add a sprinkle of naughty cheekiness before the year concludes.
“Christmas Evel” has several merits, especially its theme, world play and production. Yet, Felix’s booming and resonant voice as he raps “Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad/ I can feel the evil coming but Felix, never bad” is easily the jewel of the track.
“Christmas Tree” – BTS’ V
Dispelling holiday blues with his raspy vocals, BTS member V’s 2021 solo OST release “Christmas Tree” is the sonic equivalent of an affectionate embrace from your soulmate. Rooted in minimalist production of warm guitar plucks and rich piano notes, the cozy pop-ballad weaves a mellow atmosphere with V crooning and breathing romance into the track with his indelible vocal performance. Singing about a simple yet grand love affair,” Christmas Tree” looks at the world with a festive lens. From starry skies resembling a Christmas tree to declaring the simple joys romance carries, the tune is a love poem that will ignite the candle of romance inside you, which might otherwise have been dimmed out: “Tell you/ A million little reasons/ I’m falling for your eyes/ I just want to be where you are.”
“The First Snow” – EXO
Here’s how you know Christmas is around the corner; one, your inbox is crammed with holiday offers from brands, and two, EXO’s “The First Snow” is cropping up on Korean music charts. From the song climbing spots on domestic music charts to several idols either covering the track or casually singing it during a live stream, “The First Snow” has become a holiday staple with the track playing through your speakers around Christmas being a tradition.
Part of EXO’s December 2013 special winter album Miracles, “The First Snow” is nuzzled on a bed of acoustic guitars and sleigh bells with a rich blend of soothing harmonies and warm melodies. The dreamy chorus, especially Baekhyun’s “Merry, Merry Christmas/ Annyeong jal jinaeneungeoji” instantly wraps you in an exuberant mood and in no time, you’ll find yourself softly singing along to the track.
“Funky Glitter Christmas” – NMIXX
“Funky Glitter Christmas” is not your average NMIXX project. Setting aside their established ‘mixxpop’ genre – the polarizing sonic blend that has as many fans as critics – “Funky Glitter Christmas” hooks euphonious vocal performances within a traditional and highly palatable carol soundscape. The track steers away from sonic risks previously experimented with in “O.O,” allowing listeners to groove to the festive mood and truly bask in the glory of the group’s greatest asset – their vocal abilities. Vibrant and funky with a delightful performance, “Funky Glitter Christmas” is the perfect track to ring in the new year with!

With a never-seen-before debut, NewJeans’ first-ever comeback was much anticipated, with high expectations riding on it. The Hype Boy girl group recently returned with a pre-release single, titled Ditto. The song instantly debuted at No. 1 on the Bugs chart, No. 3 on Genie, and No. 4 on MelOn.
On Twitter, the music videos for Ditto trended for different reasons. While fans immersed themselves in the complex, haunting storyline, they couldn’t help but fawn over Park Ji-hu and Choi Hyun-wook. The actor duo are the latest in the roster of young actors making their mark in the entertainment world.
In the music videos, Choi Hyun-wook portrays a high schooler who notices Heeso, another high schooler played by Park Ji-hu. The latter is seen recording throughout the videos, and her face is covered with either her camera or her hair. However, the end credits revealed her to be the All of Us are Dead actress.
Take a look at how fans are reacting to their appearance in NewJeans’ Ditto below:

More about Ditto music videos
NewJeans’ Ditto side A music video currently sits at 3.3 million views, while side B had amassed 2.2 million views at the time of writing this article. The storyline in the videos is also complex.
Side A of Ditto builds on the perception that Heesoo has been recording NewJeans’ members, who are her friends, dancing or having fun in school. Towards the end, it is revealed that Heeso had been recording nothing as there are no people.
It suggested that Heeso recorded moments for people who never existed.
Side B shows Heeso taking action and throwing away her camera. Upon returning, she watches her old recorded videos and sees the same NewJeans’ members, who she thought were imaginary, in the clips.
Ditto is the rookie group’s pre-release single for their comeback album OMG scheduled for a January 2, 2023 release.
