Mortal Kombat Movie Producer In Tears After Fan Reactions To Trailer - Screen Rant

Mortal Kombat producer Todd Garner was moved to tears after fan reactions to the first trailer for the upcoming film. The live-action reboot of the popular video game franchise is directed by Simon McQuoid. James Wan (The Conjuring) is producing the reboot alongside Garner. Fan anticipation has been high for the film, with a proper reboot of the series long overdue. The last live-action Mortal Kombat film was released in 1997. While the first film, released in 1995, was seen as a guilty please, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was universally panned.

Now, the iconic franchise is returning to the big screen with some beloved characters. Everyone from Sub-Zero to Scorpion and Sonya Blade will be making an appearance, alongside what looks to be like some surprise cameos in the trailer. Lewis Tan will star as Cole Young, a character created for the film that will serve as an audience proxy. Earlier today, fans got a first look at the upcoming film and the brutal red-band trailer showed off the care put into the film.

Garner addressed Mortal Kombat fans on Twitter after the trailer's release. The producer says that watching fan reactions to the trailer moved him to tears as someone who worked so hard to get this film made. Garner revealed that while working on the film he had to be away from his family for five months. The reactions to the trailer made it all worth it, though.

Releasing an R-rated trailer for Mortal Kombat was a smart move. The previous two films had both been rated PG-13 and had to skimp on the violence to make that rating. One of the things that makes the Mortal Kombat games so exciting is the brutal fights that result in swift and gory deaths. The new film is looking to rectify the mistakes of the past and bring back the action that fans have come to love. It helps that they're bringing along some of the most iconic characters of the franchise, too.

The trailer's concise two-and-a-half minutes sets the scene well, balancing the world-building and character introductions alongside the savage action sequences. It helps that Mortal Kombat will also be one of the first major blockbusters guaranteed to hit its release date this year thanks to Warner Bros.' decision to stream their movies on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters. Any blockbuster is welcome for moviegoers craving action and it helps that Mortal Kombat looks to be pulling off the blockbuster scale so well.
