Blackpink’s Rosé Scores The Third-Highest-Charting Hit In U.K. History By A Korean Solo Musician (On Her First Try) - Forbes

K-pop titans Blackpink spent much of 2020 proving how incredibly popular they are and breaking barriers with hit after hit and one incredibly successful full-length. Now, just months into a new year, one of the members of the band has yet again shown just how talented and beloved she is on her own as well, and she’s scored a major win on the singles chart in one of the biggest and most important music markets in the world on her first attempt.

Blackpink’s Rosé starts her single “On The Ground” at No. 43 on this week’s singles ranking in the U.K., earning one of the highest debuts of the period. The track already stands as the third-highest-charting release by a South Korean solo musician in the country’s history.

Only two songs pushed by solo musicians from South Korea have risen higher in the U.K., and both are by the same artist. Psy remains the only artist from the Asian nation to land a top 10 hit on the U.K. singles chart, a feat he’s managed twice. First, his breakout track “Gangnam Style” went all the way to No. 1 in 2012 during a months-long period when it was truly inescapable. The cut is still, to this day, the only release by a South Korean act working on their own to rule in the country.

Less than a year after “Gangnam Style” came and went, Psy returned to the highest tier on the tally with his follow-up, “Gentleman.” That tune eventually climbed all the way to No. 10, giving the man his second appearance inside the top 10.

“On The Ground” was hyped for weeks before it was finally released, and it sold and streamed extremely well all around the world upon its arrival. The tune serves as Rosé’s first proper venture out on her own, and clearly fans love what they are hearing and enjoy supporting the star. The cut arrived with a B-side titled “Gone,” and the two were packaged together as R.

Blackpink rose to greater prominence in the U.K. last year with the arrival of their debut full-length The Album, which stalled one space shy of becoming the first No. 1 title by a South Korean girl group. The set produced three top 40 hits in the U.K., and they also snagged their highest-charting hit yet, “Sour Candy,” alongside Lady Gaga on a promotional track from her album Chromatica
