Red Velvet's Wendy Makes Dreamy Solo Debut With 'Like Water' - - Rolling Stone India

South Korean pop group Red Velvet’s member Wendy made her solo debut today with the dreamy single “Like Water.” Part of her first solo mini-album–which shares the same title–“Like Water” is Wendy’s way of thanking her fans.

Shot at different angles within what seems to be a mansion, “Like Water” adopts neo-royalty cinematography with Wendy seen embracing pensive moods in different settings. Written by prominent South Korean songwriters Kenzie and Yoo Young Jin, the record offers Wendy’s deepest epiphanies as she reflects on her blessings from those who’ve been by her side at every step of life.

The single takes an acoustic pop-ballad route with heartfelt lyrics about companionship, trust and hopes for the future. The gentle mix of guitar and band sounds keeps the rhythm ebullient as Wendy declares, “We’re destined/ We complete each other and comfort one another/ It makes you heal/ Like water, water.” The singer takes a leap with her vocal abilities as she experiments with different ranges throughout the track. Right before she wraps up with a soothing outro, the vocalist reinforces the chorus with the signature high-notes she’s famous for.

Like Water, which comprises of four other tracks titled, “When This Rain Stops,” “Why Can’t You Love Me?,” “초행길 (The Road)” and “Best Friend” featuring Red Velvet bandmate Seulgi, explores various genres ranging from pop, ballad to rock. The EP marks Wendy’s first new release after an unfortunate stage accident in 2019 which left her with pelvic and wrist fractures.
