SEVENTEEN’s HOSHI Talks First Solo Mixtape “Spider” - Teen Vogue

If there is one thing SEVENTEEN member HOSHI knows how to do is put on a show when given the chance. Today, 24-year-old Kwon Soonyoung, better known by his stage moniker, a portmanteau of the Korean words for tiger (호랑이, horangi) and gaze (시선, shison), is releasing his first solo mixtape, “Spider,” trading his animal of choice for the arachnid — temporarily, of course.

As a member of SEVENTEEN, HOSHI is no stranger to feats and accolades. In 2020, the 13-member self-producing group earned the coveted title of “million sellers” within one week of the release of Heng:garae, their seventh EP. Their latest, ; [Semicolon], followed suit shortly after. And so did 2019’s An Ode more recently with its cumulative sales. Even with such palmarès, this solo release is uncharted territory for HOSHI.

Though he has had solo stages in concert — “Hurricane,” which he performed during SVT's "Diamond Edge” world tour is an all-time fan favorite — and has posted various solo covers on social media over the years, “Spider” is HOSHI's first official solo release and comes after a week of succinct teasers and relentless interaction with fans on Weverse. (And the support of his fellow members.) Credited as lyricist, composer, and choreographer, it’s clear to see how important this release is for HOSHI. “As the leader of SEVENTEEN’s performance unit, I worked really hard to push the boundaries and create a charismatic performance even for ‘Spider,” HOSHI tells Teen Vogue over email, just days ahead of the release.

Touted as a “subtly sexy yet deadly charming” single, thematically, “Spider” shares traits with past SVT releases like “Fast Pace" and the more recent Bossa Nova-inspired “Light a Flame.” There’s a glaring sultriness that pervades all tracks. Sonically, however, they stand worlds apart. “Spider” goes for the synth-pop route with a funkier base, featuring plunking drop-like sounds and a snappy-yet-restrained bass line. “I think this [sound] came about quite organically,” HOSHI tells us. Filled with airy, quasi-murmured harmonies, the song also includes a backing voice CARATs would recognize instantly: WOOZI.

“I knew I wanted to work on “Spider” with WOOZI, my friend [and member], who has been by my side for the past ten years and watched me grow as an artist,” HOSHI recounts. “I played the song for him, and in the very beginning, there’s a part where it sounds like a water drop is falling from a spider web. From there, we naturally came up with the keyword ‘Spider,’ and compared the experience of being unable to escape an individual’s magnetic and deadly charms to the helpless movements of a prey stuck in a spider web.”
