Steven Spielberg Refuses to Reboot Jaws | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Steven Spielberg is firmly against reviving the Jaws movies.

This tidbit came to light in an article from Deadline about Spielberg's newly-minted deal to make films for Netflix through his production company Amblin Partners. Deadline reported Universal recently approached the legendary filmmaker about rebooting his 1975 classic, with Spielberg producing. However, he shot the idea down.

Based on Peter Benchley's popular 1974 horror/thriller novel, Jaws pits the residents of summer resort town Amity Island against a great white shark attacking their beachgoers and threatening their livelihood. A critical and commercial smash-hit, the film established the model for the modern summer blockbuster while catapulting Spielberg to A-list status. It was followed by three sequels, none of which came anywhere near to matching the original movie's success.

Deadline's sources at Universal and Amblin claimed Spielberg's disinterest in revisiting Jaws was common knowledge and not part of a "recent" conversation. All the same, the filmmaker remains creatively involved with other franchises he helped launch over the years. Most notably, he continues to produce new entries in the Jurassic Park/World series, including the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion. The film will even see Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum reprise the roles they originated in Spielberg's original Jurassic Park movie in 1993.

Among the other blockbuster properties Spielberg's kicked off over his career is Indiana Jones, featuring Harrison Ford as the iconic globe-trotting archaeologist. After helming the previous four movies in the franchise, Spielberg handed the job of directing over to James Mangold (Logan, Ford v. Ferrari) for Indiana Jones 5 while remaining involved as an executive producer. The film will see Ford reprise his beloved role for the final time in a story reportedly involving Nazi scientists and the 1960s Space Race between the U.S. and Soviet Union.

Spielberg will be back behind the camera on this year's West Side Story, a loose remake of the Oscar-winning 1961 musical said to hew closer to the original Broadway stage show. The film was slated to release in Dec. 2020 before being delayed twelve months in response to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Its cast includes Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) and future Shazam! Fury of the Gods costar Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria, two star-crossed lovers affiliated with rival gangs in 1950s NYC.
