In just a matter of hours, it looks like BTS’s new single “My Universe,” a collaboration with U.K.-based pop/rock band Coldplay, will debut very, very high on the Hot 100. The tune has a good shot at opening at No. 1, which will help the group make history yet again in several manners. As the septet and the quartet wait patiently to see how well the joint effort performs, the K-pop titans are surely celebrating, as they have officially reached two genre-focused Billboard charts for the first time in their storied career.
BTS appear on the current editions of both the Alternative Airplay and Rock & Alternative Airplay rankings, as “My Universe” reaches those tallies before making its way to most other Billboard lists. Radio-only charts are tracked on a slightly different timetable, so it’s not uncommon for major new releases to debut on those lists before general rankings like the Hot 100.
“My Universe” starts off inside the top 40 on the Alternative Airplay chart, launching at No. 38. The tune is one of just three debuts on the ranking this week, coming in behind only The Lumineers’ “Brightside” (No. 28) and Still Woozy’s “Woof” (No. 34).
Over on the Rock & Alternative Airplay ranking, which includes both the tracks on the Alternative Airplay chart as well as those classified as rock, rather than alternative, “My Universe” doesn’t start off quite as high. The catchy cut enters the running at No. 42, narrowly missing out on the top 40 region, which typically defines when a charting title becomes a proper hit.
BTS appear to be the first South Korean musical act of any kind to appear on both rock-leaning charts, and these new successes further expand the list of rankings the group has found themselves on. In the past few years, BTS have proved they can dominate Billboard’s all-encompassing lists, such as the Hot 100 and the Digital Song Sales tallies, while a handful of genre-only options have evaded them, until now.
“My Universe” is still just getting started, and the coming weeks will be huge for the tune on the Billboard charts. The track is bound to start off as a massive win on all purchase-focused tallies, and in time, it will likely become an enormous success on radio rankings as well.
