Rumors are surfacing that Blake Shelton might be kicked off The Voice due to the overwhelming popularity of the newly appointed coach Ariana Grande. Grande joined The Voice season 21 along with coaches John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Shelton. This marks the first time the 28-year-old two-time Grammy award-winning artist from Boca Raton, Florida, with chart-topping hits like "thank u, next" and "Side To Side" has appeared as a coach and judge for a reality competition series. Grande formerly appeared in TV shows like Ryan Murphy's Scream Queens and appeared in Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special.
He has sat in the oversized chair since The Voice first premiered in 2011 when Shelton was joined by original coaches Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green, and Adam Levine. Since that time, many coaches have come in and out, including Miley Cyrus, Shakira, Usher, and Nick Jonas. He met his now-wife, Gwen Stefani, on The Voice when she took over coaching duties from a pregnant Christina Aguilera in 2014 and later returned for season 9, season 12, season 17, and season 19. Shelton, 45, is a nine-time Grammy award nominee and has 28 number one singles. Since his reign on The Voice, eight of his team members have gone on to win the NBC singing competition.
The popularity of Ariana Grande has producers looking to replace Shelton with someone younger. According to an article posted on E! News, after reports surfaced that Shelton could be getting the boot, Grande posted on her Instagram a series of photos with a screenshot of a text message from Blake Shelton himself where he sent her a link to an article claiming that producers may be looking to replace Shelton with "fresh energy" much like Grande's. Shelton texted below the link, "Thanks a lot Ari...Thanks a f---kin' lot." Grande responded to the text by adding hearts to each of Shelton's texts, possibly showing that there isn't any animosity between the two coaches. Celebrity Katy Perry commented, "Last slide."
While Shelton is throwing out "F" bombs to Grande, other celebrities are showing their heartfelt love for the "7 rings" singer. Chrissy Teigen told her husband and The Voice coach John Legend that it will be "awkward" for him to go to work every day knowing how much she and their kids love Ariana Grande. "John absolutely knows that this house only listens to Ariana Grande," Teigen shared on her social media. "Imagine how awkward it is for John to live in this Ariana Grande household...and have to be him."
Time will tell if Blake Shelton and Ariana's Grande so-called feud is just another case of friendly coaches butting heads for attention or something more serious that could end up with Shelton getting the "thank u, next" treatment and being replaced with someone younger. Shelton and former coach Adam Levine had a longtime bromance on The Voice, which ended up outshining the contestants' performances. Viewers were just tuning in to see what verbally amusing jabs Shelton and Levine were going to hurl at each other next. Hopefully, Shelton and Grande can play nice, but keep it fun for the fans.
