Blackpink’s Jennie Launches An Acting Career Alongside The Weeknd In ‘The Idol’ - Forbes

After years of being a member of Blackpink—one of the biggest and most popular girl groups in the world—musician Jennie is now venturing into the world of acting. Breaking out on her own, she is trying something new, and she couldn’t have picked a more high-profile way to begin this journey.

Jennie makes her acting debut in the new HBO show The Idol, in which she co-stars as the character Dyanne. The series premiered on Sunday, June 4, and it marks her first real acting job, as she has been predominantly recognized worldwide for her musical and dancing abilities. Up until now, all her film credits have been connected to her work with the band that propelled her to stardom.

The Idol is the brainchild of pop/R&B musician The Weeknd, who is credited with creating, writing, and starring in the show. Additionally, he has contributed new music for the series. The storyline revolves around an aspiring pop idol and her intricate relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader named Tedros, and, unsurprisingly, things are expected to get messy.

Jennie is not the only musician featured in The Idol. In fact, several of the actors in the show began their careers in the music industry. Names such as Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, and Mike Dean join Jennie and The Weeknd in the series.

Interestingly, Jennie is officially credited as Jennie Ruby Jane in The Idol, which differs from her birth name, Jennie Kim. When she performs with Blackpink or releases music as a solo artist, she is simply known as Jennie. It seems that for her acting endeavors, she has decided to change things up and use a different name. This may be a deliberate choice to separate her creative projects and embrace a new identity in the acting realm.

While she is primarily known for her musical output as a member of Blackpink, Jennie has also released music on her own, as have her three bandmates. In fact, she was the first of the four women to go solo. She dropped a short project called, appropriately, Solo, back in 2018. That single album (as it’s known in South Korea) was fronted by a single of the same name. The CD stalled at No. 2 on the South Korean charts, while “Solo” peaked at No. 1 and was a minor sales hit in the U.S. as well.
