Richard Franklin: Doctor Who and Emmerdale actor dies aged 87 - The Guardian

Richard Franklin, the actor best known for his roles in Doctor Who and Emmerdale, has died on Christmas Day at the age of 87.

Franklin died “in his sleep” on Christmas morning after a long-term illness, a spokesperson for his family said.

The spokesperson added: “We are deeply saddened by his loss, we will fondly remember him for his generosity, creative spirit and fantastic story telling.

“He is also well remembered outside the family for his long-running career in TV and theatre where he delighted audiences of all ages. This gave him great joy and we know his legacy will last.”

Franklin’s friend Liam Rudden shared the news on social media on behalf of the family.

“It is with great sadness, that the family of Richard Franklin have asked me to share news of his passing, early this morning. Richard passed away peacefully in his sleep. Details of funeral arrangements will be shared here when announced. Sleep well Richard,” Rudden wrote.

“One thing I loved about managing Richard’s social media was reading him your messages. He was always surprised and humbled by the love shown to him and it was very much reciprocated. That love is so evident right now and I’m sure will be of great comfort to his family”

Franklin joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1963 and his first professional acting work was with the Century Theatre.

His breakout role in television was in the soap Crossroads in 1969 followed by Doctor Who two years later, where he played Capt Mike Yates during Jon Pertwee’s stint as The Time Lord.

Jenkins continued to play Yates in spin-offs, audio plays and in the novel he wrote, The Killing Stone, with his character serving as the protagonist.

The actor played businessman Denis Rigg in British soap Emmerdale.

Franklin also appeared in The Doctors, Blake’s 7 and Heartbeat, and he played Death Star Engineer Sirro Argonne in 2016 Star Wars film Rogue One.

He also appeared in West End productions including the role of Corin in As You Like It at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1967.

Katy Manning, who appeared in Doctor Who as Jo Grant, also paid tribute.

On X, formerly Twitter, she said: “Our wonderful brave captain Yates #RichardFranklin has gone on his awfully big adventure I’m so very grateful I saw him on Friday.”
