JAKARTA -- Netflix's release of "Gadis Kretek," or "Cigarette Girl" -- the global streaming giant's TV series set in Indonesia -- has drawn viewers from outside the country while highlighting its progress in intellectual property (IP) adaptation.
The drama, released in November, tells the story of Dasiyah, an Indonesian woman looking for the best formula for her family's clove cigarette business. Set in the 1960s, the series was adapted from Ratih Kumala's eponymous novel first published in Indonesian in 2012.
