Controversies
Despite their impressive achievements, IVE hasn’t been immune to controversy. Here’s a look at some of their most notable “scandals”:
- Attitude Controversy: In the past, IVE, especially Jang Wonyoung, faced various accusations of “poor attitude” for not properly greeting senior artists. In particular, back in 2021, IVE members came under backlash after failing to bow to NCT’s Jaemin, Stray Kids’ Lee Known, and Kim Minju (former IZ*ONE member) on the TV show “Music Core”. Additionally, IVE was said to not greet their seniors properly on Inkigayo. In 2023, when Stray Kids’ Bang Chan mentioned new artists not greeting him properly, netizens speculated him to be talking about IVE.
- Lazy Dancing: Back in 2023, IVE’s Jang Wonyoung faced criticism for “lazy dancing” in a TikTok video promoting the group’s song, “I AM”, especially when compared to fellow member Liz.
- Cultural Conflict with China: In 2024, IVE released the MV for their title song “Heya”, which immediately faced heavy criticisms from Chinese netizens, who accused the girl group of attempting to steal China culture by claiming elements from the MV to be Korean. In the past, Jang Wonyoung, who wore a traditional phoenix hairpin, was also accused of “cultural theft” in China. However, in both cases, most international and Korean netizens defend IVE.
- Cringe Strawberry Eating: Perhaps the most nonsensical issue to every arise, in 2022, Jang Wonyoung was criticized for eating a strawberry with 2 hands, as many netizens found her behavior to be “cringe” and “fake”. Though many defended Jang Wonyoung, the female idol still suffered from malicious comments that described her as a “pick-me girl” with a fake attitude.
